No, it’s not “a Mormon thing,” whatever that means. Just an observation that it’s winter and a lot of female newscasters seem dressed for summer - that’s what I mean by inappropriate.

And this will bake your noodles-under those desks, those men in “suits” and ties are wearing jeans in the winter and shorts, maybe even flip flops, in the summer. All we see is their top half. And the reason all the men shaved a few years back is because HDTV makes facial hair look awful. H works in the industry.

Why do we care what they wear under the desk? We can’t see it…

And have the men shaved in the years since?

Agree About what goes on under the desk - they could be mermaids for all I care.

It’s Michelle Obama’s fault. The baring of the arms. LOL.
I notice it too. It’s such a fad! Unseasonal, but still, a fad. I think “aren’t they cold???”

Judy Woodruff. Is she still alive?

The female newscasters I see are often of the age where they run on the hot side.
I had a prof who opened the door & the windows in January & everyone else had on parkas.

It is a trend…among women who want to flaunt their arms. They can’t flaunt their legs sitting at a desk, nor their abs, for sure. Arms are safe territory and going from a studio to a heated car to home, the weather isn’t much of a factor. These gals aren’t trudging to the parking lot and scraping down the car after a long shift, they’ve got a driver taking them back to their coop.

Bare arms are a way to sex-up the TV broadcast.

Lately, I’ve noticed some young women coming to work w bare arms; it’s unprofessional, along w cleavage and too-short skirts. If young women (and young men, too) want to be taken seriously in the workplace for what’s in their heads, they should avoid excessive bare skin. There’s a time and a place to show skin, and it’s not between 9 to 5.

Yes, clearly sleeveless apparel is what is wrong with modern news media…

Let’s not confuse the modern news media with news. It’s about entertainment, ratings, & advertising revenue.

It’s actually pretty difficult to find clothing with sleeves that don’t look dowdy.
We aren’t all built like Robin Wright & sleeveless can be much more flattering than a sleeve that hits too low or high.
The women I’ve seen look professional.
Now if they started combining cleavage with bare arms, that would be distracting.

My point was that I don’t see bare arms as sexy or inappropriate, and I don’t understand why anyone does. A Mormon friend explained to me that females are not supposed to bare their arms because they DO consider it inappropriate, which is why I asked. And I pointed out about the men’s pants because I would bet money that no one would be complaining of inappropriateness if those jeans were showing on camera. As far shaving-it was just a way to point out that things change in the TV industry just like any other. A few years ago facial hair on men in TV was cool, now it’s not. Today women are wearing sleeveless tops, who knows in a few years. But honestly, what they’re WEARING shouldn’t matter so much as what they’re SAYING.

I like the sleeveless tops. But, it is becoming a uniform just like the little blazers they replaced.

Hmmm, perhaps because it makes many of the older people jealous?

(What is “excessive” bare skin anyway?)

Have you noticed the new trend - glass top desks? I would not have noticed until Mr B brought it to my attention. CNN definitely has them - and boy there is major leg and footwear flaunting going on! Of course, most of those pricey Louboutins are only good for sitting at a table, so this could be the only chance for the ladies to show them off. Meanwhile, men are out of luck - no more flip flops.

I don’t really like the look of bare arms in winter, but I can handle them better than the dresses that are pulled super tight on top because of the microphone packs on their upper backs.

Oh, BB, that reminds me. It drives me NUTS when I see women doing the interviewing and all you can see are legs. They have bare legs and high heels with those stool-like things. Drives me bonkers.

I wish they would just shoot from waist up. There is nothing relevant below the waist for the news.

Stool-like things?

Yes, they sit on stools like high backed bar stools, legs crossed and bare, with very high heels on while doing an interview. I think Katie Couric used to do that on the Today show way back when.

I actually noticed the bare arms thing last week on our local newscast. They were sitting there (they sit on a couch during some segments) with bare arms and bare legs talking about the sub zero record cold temperatures. It did strike me as really odd because the apparel didn’t jive with what they were talking about. The men are in full suits because they’re sitting on the couches too.
