We’ll just pretend that you were kidding…

Who knows why they really take anyone, but my son was accepted ED (a hook in and of itself, I think) to Columbia with some possible “hooks”:
Attended intense dual arts/academic public HS where he took 3 arts classes (Performance and Tech) , plus 5-6 academic classes per term thru extended day format, founder/EIC of School Lit Mag 4 years, one of 2 student reps (the rest are admins, teachers, and parents) on School Leadership Team for 4 years, co-founder of GSA, Day of Silence Coordinator, strong, memorable (he used 2 4 letters words to describe his thoughts during a car crash) essay, in “Why CU” question, focused on the core curriculum and diversity of thought, NOT on NYC (he’s FROM NYC). Biggest hook was probably a demonstrated passion/talent for, and very strong commitment to community theatre.

those aren’t really hooks, just good things - if they are hooks, than I have lots of similar things too

My hook… well, I dropped out of school three times: once from middle school, once from high school, once from college.

Only the high school was an “official” drop out, but the other two are still significant & recorded/talked about.

And yeah… actually dropped out… never went back… no GED… etc.

So far gotten into Smith, Wellesley, Carnegie Mellon, Rice, and UChicago. Waiting on Stanford and Swarthmore.

This thread has better stand-up than Comedy Central! You guys are all bulletproof IMO.

I was really hoping that this thread wouldn’t be brought up again. I think I made some rather pretentious/arrogant statements earlier on (when I was new to CC and still thought everyone here kept attacking me).

Heh thisyearsgirl…I think you’ve been forgiven

i sing everything under the sun.

Well I dont really know if these will help buuut…

1) Founded and org at my school called Knights for Darfur, to raise money/awareness about the crisis in Darfur

2) Went to Uganda in October (missed school, and yet came back and scored a 98% on a unit final for a unit i wasnt even there for, haha), to volunteer with AIDS orphans (built a foster home, taught lessons about canada, etc)… The plan is to go back during the summer between gr 12 and uni for at least a month and hopefully teach some soccer

3) Will have played varsity soccer gr 10-12 captain

4) JV bball gr 10(leadership award), V bball grade 12 (unsure about whether to play this year… could play JV again, would it look bad if i dont play?)

5) Nominated for young calgarian of the year (but did not win, so not sure if that helps at all really, haha)

6) Born in Norway, British citizen (spent younger childhood years there), moved to canada age 9…not sure whether this is more likely to help or hinder

7) Does my dad graduating from Cambridge help? I am not planning on applying there, but I don’t know whether having a parent who has gone to a prestigious university makes a difference

8) Planning to start a Right to Play group at my school (after Christmas, though, since school ends in a week)

9) Play tier 1 club soccer (highest level where I live), won silver at provincials x 3 (but never gold )

yah…this is more EC’s than a hook I guess, but I live in Canada and to tell you the truth I am not completely sure if any of these look that spectacular compared to everyone else (since everyone on here is practically a superhero)

My hook is that I am Asian, play a musical instrument and am also on the football team (I joined so it would help me get into college…I am not any good and really don’t even like it).

Mom, Uncle, and Aunt all went to one school I’m applying to. Also, I’m an atheist, so that may help with admissions to a couple of Jesuit schools that I applied to.

high SATs, and this competition: [Now Debate This](http://www.nowdebatethis.com)

Someone had to die. It was not going to be me, not someone I knew, not even someone I did not know. It had to be a snowball

(An assignment by my Creative Writing teacher; I killed a snowball that melts throughout a poem.)
