<p>University plans to raze portions of Butler College </p>

<p>Forty years after their construction, the five dormitories in the New New Quad are scheduled to be demolished and rebuilt, in preparation for Butler College’s new four-year program and the expansion of the undergraduate student body. Lourie-Love, 1922, 1940, 1941, and 1942 Halls were due for renovation, but the University decided to rebuild because the cost of replacing the buildings was “not very different” from the cost of making repairs and upgrades, according to former Vice President and Secretary Thomas H. Wright ’62, who retired January 1. </p>

<p>Designed by architect Hugh Stubbins, who also designed the Mudd Manuscript Library and Jadwin Hall, the modernist residences of Butler are not especially beloved on campus, but Wright said appearance was not the primary reason for razing the dormitories. “It’s as much a matter of the way the buildings are arranged, in terms of planning, as it is their architecture or design that is the problem,” Wright said. “The buildings do not create Princeton-like courtyards and Princeton-like vistas.” Existing cul-de-sacs and blockages, he said, will be replaced with pathways and openings, so that students will be able to stand at the door of Wilcox Hall and see the distant green of the athletics fields. </p>

<p>Wright vowed to preserve the history of the gifts that funded the original buildings, citing the example of Palmer Stadium, which the University memorialized by embedding its original stone carving at the entrance to Princeton Stadium. Renovation funds will finance some of the construction of the new Butler dormitories, and the University will seek additional gifts. </p>

<p>The University currently is interviewing architects for the project. Demolition will begin in 2006, after Whitman College is completed and there is sufficient dormitory space for all students. Tentative plans aim for the new Butler quad to be ready for students in the 2008—09 academic year. </p>

<p>Butler, Mathey, and Whitman will become four-year residential colleges in 2006—07, the first year of an expanded student body. Wu, Walker, and 1915 Halls will remain part of Butler, in addition to the new ellipse dormitory under construction on the border of Poe and Pardee fields. </p>

<p>I read in a news article somewhere that they actually are razing Butler. How Cinderella-like, haha. Poor Butler always living in the shadow of its evil stepsibilings Rocky and Mathey, and now…oh yeah…she’s getting her Extreme Makeover ™. Heck yeah! Haha.</p>

<p>And from the way I understand it, one rescol idea that the administration is pursuing is the sister college system (i.e. pairing 2-years with 4-years), so alas…we may not all get to live in Whitman. That would be sweet, though!</p>

<p>EDIT: Haha, David found it! I knew I wasn’t crazy…well…not in that respect anyways :p</p>

<p>But is Whitman going to be completed by 2006? That would be quite nice, to live in Whit for sophomore year and have the option of staying there all four years.
I didn’t know they were transforming Mathey to a four-year college too?</p>

<p>One thing I like about the two year system is that hey if you get Butler, you can always go somewhere else after 2 years :)</p>

<p>“The trustees said, however, that they hope to blend the new buildings’ styles with the remaining architecture of Butler, unlike the case of Whitman College, for which the trustees prescribed a collegiate Gothic style.”</p>

<p>The new buildings’ architectural styles have not yet been determined, Hlafter added. However, the University recently appointed Henry Cobb of the New York-based architectural firm Pei Cobb Freed and Partners to head the project.</p>

<p>Cobb designed the Friend Center, which was completed in September 2001. But Cobb has not worked on any residential building on campus.</p>

<p>“[The trustees] have shown an interest in a more cohesive college,” Hlafter said. “[The new dormitories] will probably not be collegiate gothic or the stone building. We are hoping that what will be designed and constructed will unify the complex, 1915, Wu and the Ellipse.”</p>

<p>Awesome Blossom, I’m in 1915, too. Dunno about the triples, though. I’m in a single (boo, but I’ll live). We don’t get waffle ceiling OR brick walls (I felt the need to gloat). Unfortunately, our bathroom’s in the basement. Ack, I’m right above the laundry room - looking forward to hell-like temperatures.</p>

<p>Aludaughter is in Bloomberg…That is Butler, but was always upperclassmen before. She has a single. I have not yet broken the sorrowful news to her. (I found out from Alufamily in CA while I am in China. AluD is off on a road trip with girlfriends). She wanted company and hoped to be somewhere in the upper campus as do most gregarious types.</p>

<p>Still, looks like she has some good company in Butler:)</p>

<p>Anyway, what are the rooms like in Bloomberg? Anyone know? The outside looks nice from the photos. Any helpful hints to cushion her disappointment - which of course she will get over but I’m the mom, what can I say?</p>

<p>Singles in bloomberg range from 125 to 160 square feet. they are nice, the buidling is gorgeous with a ton of study facilities and is very clean/new. it is slightly seperated from the rest of butler (the other butler buildings are in the butler quad). most of bloomberg hall is still upperclassmen. a wing of the building is part of butler (about 1/4 of the rooms) but the rest are still upperclass.</p>

<p>I was disappointed when I first found out, Alumother, but I’m pretty happy with 1915 and my cozy single. But Bloomberg is the best dorm in Butler, so that’s better than having a bad triple in Mathey, right?
I think we will have a nice group of people in Butler. :)</p>

<p>Cookieson requested substance-free and is in Rockefeller College and has 4 roommates. I can’t seem to find room T02 Buyers Hall on the floor plan. It’s a suite. Is it in the tower on the second floor?</p>
