I had to get a titer recently for work in a hospital. My mumps came back low, though my measles and rubella was fine. I got the mmr again. Made me wonder how my immunity was to whooping cough! No fuss no muss for me - I gladly got another shot. My office manager wasn’t immune to chicken pox, and she had them as a child. This new account for us ended up finding things we were both glad to find out the easy way.
The Onion says it well…

EPTR…that is awesome.
@EPTR - that’s great.
The number of affected people in the CA outbreak is rising…this video says in one area of LA the vaccination rate is the same as that in South Sudan.

I have a friend high up in the marketing department at Disney. He hasn’t mentioned this and I haven’t asked, but guessing this is a nightmare for him!
It’s gotten to the point where people with infants too young to be vaccinated are afraid to take them out in public.
I had a medical appointment today and was again asked about certain African countries or if I had contact with an Ebola patient at any time in the last 3 weeks.
A CDC lady said on that last link that “measles spreads like wildfire”. You can be in a room an hour after an infected person has left that same room and you will catch it.
I can’t believe this thread even exists. I can’t believe there are people who argue about the benefits of vaccinations. This is the 21st century. Apparently, the number of really dumb and/or willfully ignorant Americans is on the rise. That’s the only reason I can think of for measles at Disneyland in 2015.
Maybe it’s also that the number of cluelessly self-centered Americans is on the rise. From the Onion article (link posted by @EPTR in post #1061):
Once again, the Onion nails it.
It’s gotten to the point where people with infants too young to be vaccinated are afraid to take them out in public.
Hasn’t it always been like that though?
At least when you nurse, babies get some protection.
I think that the Orange County public health officials should release information about Patient Zero. Not his/her name but it would be helpful to know where that person contracted measles. It’s sort of unfair to call these the “Disneyland” measles cases. Measles didn’t originate there.
Oh please, eneraldkity, the pro-bf brigade is just as clueless. You don’t get oodles of protection against infectious disease and breast milk is not some magic elixir.
I don’t think EK was saying breastfeeding is a substitute for vaccination. It would not surprise me if some of the anti-vax wackos believed that it is, though.
Here’s more on the clusters in some of the wealthier areas of LA. In some schools as many as 70% of parents have filed “personal belief exemptions,” which should instead be called something like “screw everyone else” exemptions.
Some of these people could be kicking themselves in the butt for being too lazy to look up the information and to fill out the forms.
Sure, EK, it was like that a few generations ago, pre-vaccines.
The last several decades- and the majority of the lives of most of the people on this forum- have NOT been like that. Herd immunity has protected infants. Now, that’s no longer the case. We’ve fallen bellow herd immunity threshold levels in almost every vaccine.
It’s despicable.
Disneyland is a tourist hub. It’s not exactly filled with rich people from Los Angeles.
Yes, these are 2 different things being referenced: the Disneyland story, and the fact that wealthier people from Los Angeles have horrendous vaccination rates.
Perhaps the Gates Foundation should open a program site in Hollywood.
Many of the people you call “anti-vaxxers” are people who were very pro vaccine and stopped vaccinating only because a child was damaged by a vaccine.
