When people don't vaccinate their kids

Well, maybe this will prompt some action. Because of course nothing can get in the way of sports…

I like the idea of anti-vaccinated people wearing masks in public (although I still think they shouldn’t be in school). If they feel shamed or ostracized, well…there’s a simple solution.

I don’t see why it would be. HIPAA applies to the health care team and health care entity, not a public school. If the school nurse is announcing the reasons for suspension, they might have a case. If the school nurse is not involved and/or is silent on the reason for suspension, I see no HIPAA claim here.

Are people from Oregon likely to be Seahawks fans and likely to go to the super bowl? If I remember correctly Oregon was one of the highest non-vax states.

P.S. I loved the Jon Stewart/Samantha Bee and the other faux House of Cards links. To imagine a doctor drawling, “well we’ll just have to hope that little Johnny survives to adulthood” is too funny. And Samantha Bee, foaming at the mouth in front of that crazy woman, LOL!

“Again, you can’t just pick on one group…you got to treat everyone equally and hold their opinions and values in the same esteem as the next persons.”

Why do you say such silly things when it’s clearly not true?

Student records fall under FERPA. FERPA allows for the release of student health records in cases of a health or safety emergency.

Just FYI, that bill did not pass both chambers and has not been signed into law. The same goes for its second incarnation. The governor has voiced no support for it, either.

I know it’s off topic, but I do get tired of people assuming that this is a law on the books in Michigan. It isn’t.

Finnlet, thanks for the clarification. I should have said “the Michigan House.”

Other states are looking to introduce similar legislation as well, from what I have read.

Good luck to them with those laws. They will be tossed for being unconstitutional.

My niece has several friends who have chosen not to immunize their kids. My niece and her H have some nutty ideas too - but at least not that nutty.

My well educated niece, who I respect and love dearly, is one who (I think) does not vaccinate her kids. I did not really realize this until she brought up, on Face Book, how disappointed she was at the level of vitriol and invective on both sides of the issue. She then said that her decisions about vaccinating her children were between her, he husband and the kids’ doctor who agreed with what they were or were not doing. I commented that I was concerned about those who were immunocompromised, about young children and about those diseases which were rampant when I was a child making a come-back.

Her response was:

How on earth do you respond to that? I don’t even know where to begin…

You don’t, churchmusicmom. You just don’t.

But, if it were someone I didn’t care about severing a relationship with, I’d say a few things:
1- Yes. We are overdue for a pandemic of historic proportions. BUT that might not come in our lifetime. It might not come in our kids’ lifetime. We have no idea when/if it’ll come. In the mean time, why not protect ourselves against what we KNOW we can?
2- Vaccine aren’t just about you. What may or may not happen doesn’t give you the right to expose others to known diseases.
3- If your child gets x disease and dies and/or infects and kills an immunocompromised individual, would you be able to live with yourself? (I know I wouldn’t)

Buy her family tickets to the superbowl, churchmusicmom? :-bd

Oh jym, I thought you said “Disneyland” at first… and I am going to hell for laughing at that.

  1. Whether or not SuperVirus strikes, there are enough other dangerous vaccine-preventable diseases like measles, polio, pertussis, etc. that are out in the wild that getting the vaccines for them (assuming no medical contraindication) reduces your and your kids' risk of death or permanent disability if they are exposed to someone with these diseases.

Romani-
Actually both are equally funny-- and baaaaad. Slap our hands… :-SS Actually-- yours is funnier.

Also, perhaps send this article around:

@churchmusicmom‌ - I don’t know how you can respond. She clearly only cares about her kids and thinks that those immuno-suppressed kids are someone else’s problem. :frowning: It’s one thing to believe that there will be a new virus/plague that will strike, and another to willingly expose people to a disease that is easily preventable. Unfortunately, there are many people who think the way your niece does.

If my relative/friend said this:

I’d have a simple answer. I’d say:

“I don’t want to be on my deathbed in 50 years thinking that my behavior might have contributed in some way to the acceleration of a disease among the general population, or that I might have inadvertently or unwittingly contributed to the lessening of someone else’s life span. I couldn’t live with myself if I did that, and I certainly wouldn’t want my kids to have the burden of thinking that they too might have led to the diminishment of someone else’s time on earth.”

Thankfully, national coverage of the outbreak is picking up. Let’s see if it makes a difference.

I am really over the stupid peoplehttp://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/31/us/as-measles-spreads-in-us-so-does-anxiety.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=first-column-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

Just got into the dumbest argument ever with a relative who, when I said I was glad that NJ does not allow a personal belief exemption, but only a documented religious one, maintained that this was discrimination against atheists. (right, let’s allow more people to make non-science based decisions that impact others.)

Why would you decline vaccination based on being an atheist?
