Seems to me that name calling and trash talking about people, by even those in very powerful positions, is now quite acceptable, and even cheered, by a large minority of people these days. So, I’m not going to get my panties in a twist by some professor, at a middling college, saying what she did. More important things in the country and world going on to get in a tizzy over.
@emilybee clearly you are not in tune with social media because that is exactly what it does…sends everyone on a tizzy.
Professor + hateful tweets = CC topic.
Especially by those with too much time (and issues) on their hands…
@CU123, while I’m not on twitter and rarely on FB, IMO, this does not rise to a level of poutrage that necessitates reporting about at all. There are dozens of nasty tweets every day that are much more news worthy and worty of outrage over than this.
Guess USA TODAY doesn’t agree and frankly neither do I (or the provost at Fresno State) as it reflects directly on the university.
Professor who went on Barbara Bush ‘racist’ rant may not be saved by tenure, could lose job
Constitution gives her a right to be an idiot. What’s nice about social media is we all know know.
I saw nothing in that article about her possibly being fired. All it said was maybe she would be disciplined.
I don’t believe in quelling speech, especially on college campuses. Absolutely not a “fireable” offense.
“Could lose job”” but it is USATODAY and they love to lead with misleading headlines.
@CU123, which is one of the reasons why I don’t read USA Today. Nowhere in the article did “might be fired” mentioned, yet you posted: “ Professor who went on Barbara Bush ‘racist’ rant may not be saved by tenure, could lose job.”
Ummmmmmm…:that was the title of the article…
^ Then it should have been in quotes in your post.
Perhaps this is a somewhat analogous incident:

http://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/education/article119809563.html
http://www.fresnobee.com/news/local/article209197719.html is an article about Jarrar and her posting about Bush from a more local source, if you do not care to get your news from the Daily Mail.
An offensive thing to say no doubt and I am a big fan of Mrs. Bush but she did call Geraldine Ferrero a nasty name back in the day or actually “a word that rhymes with rich”. Great woman yes, saint no. Barbra Bush was far more influential than this professor.
@emilybee I’m just guessing here, but are you, in fact the English teacher from Fresno State… 8-|
@Veryapparent: Barbara Bush called Ferraro personally to apologize for that remark. I wonder if a similar apology will be forthcoming from the “professor”.
Not to be all Pollyanna here, but here it goes - where is the civility? If I don’t agree with something or someone, I don’t have to go announce it on twitter. If you don’t have something nice to say would go a long way in these cases.
