Right. We can equate derogatory comments about entire races of people to insensitive comments towards one person/family…
I thought it was rude and crass and shock-jockey. But shock-jocks do just that, shock you out of your normal way of thinking. After taking a minute to get over my disgust at someone being gleeful at the death of another human, I thought, wow, what makes someone a war criminal? And thought about the saying that one person’s freedom fighter is another person’s terrorist. And another saying along the lines that the only people who have no enemies are people who do nothing.
So, she made her point (which I disagree with). But she could have made it without being gleeful that someone died. I think it’s that excess that creates an atmosphere of hate, and that’s what’s contrary to the university’s values. And I do think she should be arrested for clogging up the suicide prevention hotline.
I agree with Melvin.
Also, I will add that I won’t cry in my Cheerios if the college does have the ability to fire her. At the least, I hope students avoid her classes.
Finally, only tangentially related, this reminds me of 22 Jump Street. For those who watch a higher caliber movie, there was a scene with a college professor expounding on the freedom of having tenure and being able to say whatever he wanted in the classroom without having to worry about being fired. This wasn’t in a classroom like the movie, apparently, but it’s also not really very original.
Actively interfering with a campus suicide hotline isn’t insensitive, it is life threatening. Someone with so little regard for student’s lives really should not be teaching them.
When someone shows you who they are–believe them.
Oh, for sure @roycroftmom. I think everyone agrees that the suicide hotline aspect was a separate issue than the disrespectful glee over Barbara Bush’s death. Since the title of the thread is about the comments on Mrs. Bush, I think more posters are focusing their discussion on that aspect.
When one steps outside - way outside - of majority norms, that’s what it usually looks to be. But, because there’s so many people on twitter, facebook, etc, there’s bound to be a few who’ll validate whatever particular bile is being spewed. Honestly can’t help but believe that validation is slowly sinking us all, one vile step at a time, but…
The Bush family, if they knew of them, would appreciate your posts, poetsheart.
Obviously she’s been dropped on her head one too many times. And she need to stay away from the all you can buffet.
And yet another individual who feels the need to be nasty. I will never understand why people do this.
Because they think it will get them support. Sometimes they are correct in that it will get them support.
So she is racist, sexist, misandrous, antisemitic and soaking in smug privilege…
Pretty well sums it up!
Even (some) kids will do things that seem bad, odd, or counterproductive when they crave the attention it brings them. Adults are no different.
