When you read your own posts...

I think I’m pretty much the same, except I’m a little more gregarious on line. On line there is always someone to respond to, IRL the onus is more often on you to start conversations, and not just continue them. I’m frequently appalled by grammatical errors in my post. I leave off plurals or past tenses and frequently substitute homonyms. I wonder sometimes if people will think English is not my native tongue!

I downloaded the newest version of Firefox and now have spellcheck. In fact it just put a bunch of little red dots under “spellcheck”, how the heck am I supposed to spell it? :)

With Firefox 2.0+…highlight the word then RC…you should have some spelling suggestions.

I think I always sound too serious. My ‘name’ is one i used many years ago and I’m sorry I first used it here.
Also, since people know me, I rather edit myself

^^Could be worse, you could be “nerdbookworm” (then we could discuss arcane technology and new OSs. :))

For example, I just wrote a post about hybrid cellphones…and some could actually think the subject dull. Doesn’t that just floor you? How could that be?

cameliasinensis reminds me of me a bit.

If CC were a big room full of a bunch of people having random conversations and flitting around, I would be the girl sitting on a chair in the darkest corner with her coat still on and her mouth effectively glued shut. =X I’m a lot better at expressing myself in writing, I’m a lot more ‘outgoing’ online, and I’m a lot braver about the things that I say that I probably would not say to people if I were talking to them face-to-face (if I even spoke to them at all). This is probably closer to my “real” personality, I guess.

I’ve been posting on forums for years, actually (not this one, obviously) and I’m pretty sure it’s affected my writing style, and I think it also affects my speech sometimes - one of the forums I post at has a lot of British members and I have a tendency to pick up some of their words and style of writing, and then I get my American friends asking me why I word things so strangely. I also find myself saying something, and then wanting to add something to it or correct myself, and thinking “edit” in my head before I do it. Although I figure I’m good as long as I don’t actually start saying “edit” out loud beforehand…

deliberate “faking”, even on a web forum, is simply a form of hypocrisy and is unethical. I would lose much of my self-respect (yep!) if I catch myself trying to be what I’m not.

It’s just a matter of access to the EDIT and DELETE buttons.

I’m much more witty on CC, less serious, but in the same way, slightly less arrogant. I guess the idea that what you say is going to be read, and can be read by lots of other people does affect your style. Also, the fact that one can’t type as fast as one can think does help…

What else, ah, I use a lot more Latin on CC than in real life. :D

Hmm… I have no idea if I’m the same. I think I’m probably different in some ways, but I can’t put a label on it.

Good topic!

I am pretty much the same on CC and IRL, only IRL I am a bit naughtier.

I always keep myself slightly in check on CC, just in case one of my kids or neighbors is peering in unbeknownst to me.

I’m probably more succinct online too.

;) (Just deleted “a bit” before succinct.)

IRL, I’m overshadowed by my H’s profession, which requires me to behave.
Here, not so much.

Here, I can ramp up, try out paragraphs, send them 90% of the time. Rereading them, on occasion, reassures me that I have always had things to say. It might even be having a positive cross-over into real-time, where I’m becoming ever-so-slightly more forthright.

Sooo…thank y’all.

ROFL SB!! I’d have to claim the same, and I’m bad enough on CC!!! ;)

I actually do know how to use the spell check. I just refuse to believe it’s two words. :)

paying3tuitions, I am glad you have a place to express yourself.
I recall a friend telling me about her cancer forum, and eventually realizing she was communicating with mrs. edwards
Some people come across as smart, witty, knowledgeable, provocative, earthy, etc. I feel ordinary in such good company.
I use firefox, and haven’t taken time to figure out speellcheck.

I also don’t know what hybrid cellphones are.

Isn’t the over-use of “uh” a Yale badge of honor?

Isn’t it “you know” sprinkled in like a comma?

If CC were a classroom, I would be sitting in the back not saying much, but definitely listening and enjoying the conversation! I guess I’m like that in real life too!

Me too! Me too! (redundant, but at least 10 characters)

I’m always petrified that someone from my school community is going to recognize me on here- because I’ve said some unflattering things about my kid’s school (all true tho’). I hope they don’t, at least until my youngest graduates.

“If CC were a classroom, I would be sitting in the back not saying much, but definitely listening and enjoying the conversation! I guess I’m like that in real life too!”

I am also a LOT like this both here and IRL–more an observer taking away with me whatever makes the best sense from what I see and hear from others. I do find it easier to “raise my hand” a lot more here than IRL. Often by the time I formulate my thoughts and words IRL, the “window of opportunity” to say something has already passed, but here that window can easily be reopened. (oh, and just as (over) analytical IRL as here!)
