When you travel, do you...

I’m traveling right now, and not only just unpacked suitcase into drawers… I KonMaried the drawers. my norm for more than an overnight.

Since we moved to Maine 2 1/2 years ago, we have had lots of guests. People really like Maine. We are slowly acquiring the stuff we need to make our guest suite really nice (luggage rack, soft towels, every soap and body product you can think of, etc.) but one thing we don’t yet have is a chest of drawers.

I rarely stay anywhere for more than 3 nights, but do like to use one hotel drawer if a multi night stay, and more appreciate hanging things in a closet. One night, no need to unpack.

Question on bed stripping. Often folks strip a bed after a stay. It is nice gesture, but often I am ready to focus on many other things besides the guest space after someone leaves, and am happier leaving the guest bed for a few days so I can catch up on bills or yard work or whatever. So I ask when leaving someone’s home. But then wonder if they are truthful when they say to just leave it. Sometimes I remake it, if they provide sheets. Opinions?

I tend to strip the bed. My guests usually do too. I don’t mind just leaving them on a chair or something if I don’t have time to do the laundry right away.

I usually do end up doing laundry when visiting relatives, although it’s more so I can pack lighter and do it mid-trip than to go home with clean clothes. My mother-in-law lives in Australia and we usually now do a stopover somewhere else on the way there so we’ll have clothes for both summer and winter so might have only outfits for 4-5 days in each climate but actually stay 7-10 days in each (eg, last trip we went to Hong Kong for 4 nights and then Bali for 8, in condos with a washing machine, then to winter in Australia for about 9 nights). With a family of 5 the laundry adds up pretty quickly and I can do a load every couple of days if I have access to a machine, but it means we can pack pretty lightly which we all prefer… we don’t mind rewearing everything frequently on these sorts of trips.

I affirmatively tell guests not to strip the bed because I don’t like how that looks if I don’t want to deal with it right away. Being a guest in someone else’s home is a hard pass for me but if I were I’d ask what they prefer and include “if you have another set of Sheets I’d be happy to strip the bed and put the new ones on when I leave.”

Unless staying for a week, I just hang the dressy clothes and live out of the suitcase. On a week long cruise, I unpack everything and stash the suitcase under the bed.

I bring my own shampoo etc, even when travelling by air. For my guests, I am glad to supplement if they need something. We have some space in den/guestroom closet. No drawers, but nice space on the desk for suitcase.

Our guest suite has a fully stocked medicine cabinet, new toothbrushes, nightlights, a Keurig, hair dryer, nice toiletries, soaps, shampoos/conditioners, fluffy towels, robes, nice hangars, etc. and the closet, dresser, and nightstand are completely empty for guest use as that bed/bath is not used for any other purpose. Years ago I read an article that encouraged hosts to spend a night or two in their own guest room to determine what it might be lacking. From that experience and our years in hotels, I’ve attempted to ensure nothing is amiss. Before guests arrive, I turn down the bed, fill the bedside carafe with ice water, and put a vase of fresh flowers, a small bowl of fruit, and assorted K-cups on the dresser. When our son leaves for his duty station at the end of the summer, my next DIY project is his casita. I plan to remake that into a short-term rental as it has a sitting room and kitchenette in addition to a bedroom, full bath, and walk-in closet. Our goal with guests is to provide them ample space, storage, supplies, and total privacy so they do not feel they are imposing on us in any way. When they leave, I do not want them to attempt any stripping or cleanup. I am happy to take care of all of that.

Except for one-night stays, I always unpack everything when we travel. I hate living out of a suitcase, but I also don’t like to travel and try to avoid it if I can.

Never unpack into drawers in hotels due to bedbugs. Nope, I even zip my suitcase after I take the clothes out and I don’t leave it on the floor either. I do hang up my coat and maybe some business clothes. In someone’s home, I would never unpack into drawers unless I was staying more than a week.

I also tell guest to not strip the bed. I like it if they just pull the covers up. And I hate it when they put the used linen in the laundry room. I will wash them when I am ready but if they are in my way I am forced to wash them immediately. When I have been a guest I ask and am usually told to strip it. I am fine with doing whatever the hosts wish.
That said, I have taken a vow to never stay with anyone again as long as I have the finances to pay for a hotel. I am a true night owl and need my own schedule which feels like rudeness in someone else’s home. As long as the stay is not too long and the guests are interesting I am ok having guests. Just as long as they know they won’t see me before 10 a.m. unless we are going somewhere for the day.
There are drawers and a closet in the guest room. soaps and such in the bath. There is also a hairdryer and a curling iron and a flat iron in the bathroom.
