<p>It is interesting to read of all these schools where seniors end before everyone else. Here they all go until June 14 with exams. Schools start here in late August, the week prior to Labor Day generally.</p>

Orientation - August 22nd
1st Day of Class - August 24th
Last Day of Finals - May 24th</p>
<p>Public HS in New York State. Last day of regular high school classes 6/12. NYS Regents exams given 6/13 through 6/21. Graduation 6/23.</p>
<p>Last day was May 4th
Graduation is June 6th</p>

<p>Due to a new state law, we started the day after Labor Day. (Brag alert – Baccalaureate is June 2. We didn’t go when Daughter graduated, but we’ll go this year. Son is president of before-school Bible Study group and is therefore in charge of planning Baccalaureate.)</p>
<p>Public, last day is June 4, followed by exams.</p>
<p>The district near us ended last week but they go back a week earlier in the fall–mid August! :eek:</p>

<p>Well, I guess I can say my son is no longer a senior … he’s a rising freshman in college. :eek:</p>
<p>His last class was on May 11th and he completely finished with his last AP exam on May 15th. Graduation was May 18th – outside in the most beautiful, cool, non-humid weather we could ever have in Houston.</p>
<p>My sophomore son finished his last finals on May 23rd – he was supposed to finish up on May 22nd, but the school had a power failure and they had to postpone the last final! Not fun!</p>

<p>My husband (who grew up in the South) is continually commenting on what he sees as an unfair disconnect in the AP class/exam system for students on the Sept.-June school year. The AP exams are in early May, and the teachers/students have to really hussle to get in all the needed material by then. Other schools that begin in August, he says, have an advantage. Does anyone have a view on this? I figure it’s something the school buys into when they take on the AP program, and they just have to make it work. But I can see what he means.</p>
<p>I’m reading this thread to see if Aug./May vs. Sept./June school years are as regional as I’ve always thought. Interesting! Plus, so many of you say your h.s. students below senior year go longer than the seniors. That seems strange to me–everyone ends on the same regular class day here. I think there’s a state law about number of class hours in a school year, or something, so I guess that’s why all 4 years go the same number of days…</p>
<p>Snow days? Our district has taken up the policy of “building in” a few make-up days around Memorial Day, spring break, etc. so that the school year does not get extended. If they run over on snow days, they simply “lose” the Friday off before Memorial Day, etc. Seems to work fairly well, except if you need to travel or plan an event of some kind around those weekends/breaks.</p>

<p>In Virginia, schools always started after Labor Day, tho I understand this is changing in some districts. Before air conditioning, it was just too hot in August. We sweated a lot in June, too. :(</p>
<p>Hi, mommusic–I should have been clearer–Nobody gets the Friday before Memorial Day off here as part of the regular school schedule either. What happens is that if the district allowed for say, 5 snow days in a given school year, but they only used 3 of them, then they have 2 days off that they give the kids somewhere else in the year. One year one of those extra days was given the Friday before Memorial Day. Sometimes it takes that long (into May) before they know for sure that they won’t need all 5 days for snow! Ha. Just kidding, but actually this year, the kids’ last snow day was in April, if you can believe it!!!</p>
<p>And, yes; that was always my guess–that the kids in the South get out in May because it just gets too hot to go any later. I have to say, though, that taking NYS Regents exams in June up here in hot and sticky NYS h.s. gymnasiums with hundreds of other steaming adolescent bodies and no air-conditioning (a.c. is still not commonly found in all of our schools here, or certainly not in every room) is not a pleasant experience either. 
I did it back in the stone age of the 70s and remember some years almost passing out from a deadly combination of test anxiety, hormones, heat, and humidity! Ugh.</p>
<p>Dr. Mom, I agree about the AP schedule putting late June enders at a disadvantage. My daughter took the APUSH exam on May 11, with six weeks in the school year left to go. They made it to Ike and the 50’s. The teacher took one day to try and summarize civil rights, Vietnam, Nixon, the social changes of the 60’s-70’s, up to Reagan. It also creates a problem with block scheduling of AP classes. Feb-May isn’t enough time, and Sep-Jan leaves a big gap of time between finishing the course and taking the exam. Our school does APUSH as a year long course (counting as two years worth with the block) but some APs are just one semester.</p>
<p>The funny thing is that California schools are (correct me if I’m wrong) on the same Sept - June schedule and it’s got to be really hot in Southern California in June. Our school builds in 5 snow days but if they are not used they just remove them from the end of the school year. This year the calendar said they would have their last day on June 15 but instead it will be June 13.</p>
<p>I’ve thought about the disadadvantage with regards to the AP tests also. I wonder what research has shown for the schools with the Sept - June schedule. The other problem with that is that the teacher still has the kids after the AP test for another month. In our HS, that means the teachers add on a final, just to keep the kids motivated.</p>

<p>DS exempted finals, so has essentially been done since his last AP around May 15! Graduation for the Srs was May 12</p>
<p>We are also in NYS (Scarsdale) and we go back to school the Wednesday after Labor day and graduation is June 22nd, after the final regents exams. As i mentioned earlier, our district dealt with the senior slump issue by instituting senior options for the last 6-7 weeks of school. Kids get internships or do special projects, mentored by in school sponsors (teachers) and site sponsors. Its a more productive use of their time than merely counting the days til graduation. Kids who take (took, see prior Scarsdale AP discussion!) APs go to their AP classes til the exam and then start their internship/project. One of the reasons for reexamining the AP courses offered at Scarsdale HS is to be able to reevaluate and improve the senior options experience.</p>
<p>I used to go into late june usually the 20-something…i went to a nyc suburb ny hs…on long island the school has had things written up about it the principal has been mentioned on this website(altho the principal is a pyscho…)</p>
<p>i now go to private school about a 1/2-45 minutes from that school and i moved closer…its a special ed school so no regents(i know normal private schools that dont do regents tho my sister who went to a waldorf school her entire life never took a regents) and our last final is the 6th and our last class is the friday b4</p>
