Where are places that you have found a lost item?

I was just looking and looking for an unpaid bill, thanks to this thread. I looked at all the usual and unusual places and then lo and behold happened to check a canvas bag that was by my computer and voila, there it was. Paid it by phone immediately and am no longer concerned about it.

Good luck in finding the dang paper. I’ve had H move my papers or end up burying them under clean laundry on my bed! I’ve also had him sweep up my glasses, thinking they were his!

Been there, done that with return plane tickets. Found them where I safely hid them for the family when we emptied suitcases at home. Thank goodness for today’s computers!

I keep checking back in hopes the OP found the lost item! I will say one to St. Anthony for you too!

Weirdly 90% of our lost items are between the front car seat and the middle compartment.

Yes, whenever possible, I scan all important docs do if I lose them, they’re also on the computer. I do end up searching for things more often than I’d like or care to admit.

^That’s a good idea, thanks @HImom I’m another one who loses things more often than I care to admit. I have come to despise paper so all my statements are now online which works for me. Unfortunately, H is the opposite and prefers paper. :expressionless:

I once had a boss who was a high-level exec who was brilliant and was like the Absentminded Professor – really disorganized and lost things within mere minutes of acquiring them. He would bring important papers (or passport, or whatever) to me and say “Put this in a safe place”. I am pretty much the last person who could be trusted to remember where the safe place was. So, I soon created a hanging file at the back of my file drawer in my desk and labelled it “A Safe Place”. And it worked great. I still have one of those files in my current office and at home, but the important things don’t always find their way into the file before they go astray. :-/

I like paper too but a computer is the safety blanket.

My “trick” is to think out loud. “Now, if I had this thing in my hand right now, and needed to find a good place to put it, where would that be.” This is different than going back in your memory and retracing your steps.

Starting fresh with what makes the most sense, where would I want to store this thing now? And I have a 50/50 chance of going to that spot and finding the item.

No news here. I know I can just make a phone call but wanted to handle this by mail.
I tried to call and the phone was not working (using special caption phone). I found out I have
two weeks to answer. Also, since it was Friday afternoon before Labor Day, I decided to wait to
call either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Maybe St. Anthony will come back from vacation in the mean time.
I have had many times when something is stumping me an I have searched and searched.
I decide to let it go. After awhile I just walk straight to it. No searching just knowing. I also fixed
our dishwasher this way last month :D. 3 years of tearing it apart and one evening while here alone
I walked past it and thought “the heat element”. That was it.
So I am just going to wait and see. Fingers still crossed.

H saw it next to the computer last and nothing went out to the recycle from that room.
I either took it somewhere to read it or I sleepwalked and shredded it O:-).
HImom, I even thought to myself that I should make a copy immediately. This paper knew that
I did not want it or like it so there is that.

I am afraid to delete emails because I may need them and sure enough I do! We needed the email I got from usps about forwarding my folks’ mail—over 11months ago!

We using hanging file folders at work. Many times a missing paper is found at the bottom of the file drawer UNDER the hanging files. Instead of slipping it into a folder, it was slipped BETWEEN two folders. For some reason, it never occurs to me to look there in the first place and the paper is usually found by accident after I have given up on it.

When my kids were little, they gave me a pair of gold hoop earrings for Christmas. Just a few weeks later, I had worked all day, gone to a meeting that night, picked up the kids from my mom who was babysitting, and returned home to find one of the earrings missing. I searched everywhere I had been and looked in the pockets of the coat I had been wearing. I felt so badly about losing the gift so soon after I received it.

Fast forward about 3 years. My son had received a cat for Christmas. I noticed it was reaching its paw under the clothes dryer and it ended up pulling out the earring!

I lost my wedding ring for several months, discovered it in the toe of my boot, where I had placed it to go to the gym, planning to shower and dress afterward. An emergency happened, I left without changing and put the boots back on the shelf.

The cat instantly earned his lifetime supply of kibble!

I always enter the house from the garage and sometimes when I disturbed for some reason, I will put my keys or mail on a garage shelf before entering the house. I always look there first when I misplace stuff now.

My wedding ring fell off my finger and into a hanging folder. I stick stuff in my Day-Timer and forget it’s there and not in the cabinet with the bills/other papers.

We have always kept an envelope of cash for emergencies. I was picking up my mother to take her to sit with my dad at the hospital and she mentioned she needed to stop and cash a check so she would have money for parking and food at the hospital. As my husband was sitting at the desk doing bills, I asked him to hand me some of the cash to take to mom. When he pulled out $200, I told him she just wanted $50.

Fast forward 20 minutes or so, hubby said I didn’t hand him back the money, and we can’t find it anywhere. Not in my wallet with the $50 bill, not in the trash can next to him or the kitchen trash. I was afraid he shredded it as he had run the shredder, but didn’t see anything in the shredded green! We can only hope he put it back in the money envelope which he doesn’t remember doing, but also doesn’t remember taking the money back from me.

I am a believer that things show up when you quit looking for them if they are really somewhere to be found.

^waiting and not looking!

Alas, I’ve also lost my wedding rings, but will check the toes of shoes. I lost one favorite earring and the next spring, looked down and there it was, in the garden, partly hidden by leaves. (A great save, since we would have raked, when spring cleaning the garden.)

I usually keep my everyday bracelets in one spot in the kitchen, since I take them off when cooking. Today I moved the fridge to see if the missing one had sliped between that and the counter. Alas, no luck. But I did clean the floor back there. Of course, the one missing is expensive. The others are costume jewelery.
