Yes. And I’ve seen more contemporary versions. A possibility
I wonder if there could be some kind of table setup that could set over the the top of piano along wall when neither needed. Chairs of course would need to come from somewhere (other than kitchen, since barstools there). Hmmm… maybe bar height table over the piano.
If you look up trestle tables you can find more traditional and more modern styles. Basically an extendable table that can “fold”/reduce to the size of a thin sofa table (behind a couch) or a side table. Here is one example:
It’s a nice option for people who entertain only occasionally or who want to maximize their space for other purposes when not entertaining. You can also get really nice looking foldable wood chairs these days to pull out when needed.
We’ve often said that dining rooms are our most underutilized room - except for stacking stuff on the table! If you don’t think you’ll make regular use of a dining table, and you want to maximize your living space, I think look for dining table alternatives.
By the way, I’ve always loved the four chairs around a round coffee table concept. Almost bought a house that had this feature and if we have bought, I would have definitely wanted to replicate that layout - so cozy, so usable!
My sister has this and it’s the most used space in her house!
I LOVE round dining tables. Everyone can see and talk to everyone else. And it works well if your DR is a square, not a rectangle.
If you turn that table 90 degrees, you can place the long edge along the wall and have a bench for seating underneath, and chairs facing the wall. Then the table could be pulled away when you have additional guests.
Something to think about: Do you need the table space for any hobbies? We keep or kitchen and dining room table (used most evenings for dinner) mostly clear. But we like the fact that there is “down light” for doing the occasional puzzle, item assembly or other project. We used to do paperwork there together sometimes too, but most thing now on computer.
Our dining table is near large windows and is used nightly and often for projects I am working on. It gets a lot of use. But, if that is not your thing, then it takes up a lot of space.
Anyone actually have one of the convertable coffee tables? I saw them and really thought it would work for DD’s tiny apartment space.

I’d thought of this as well.
@esobay my D has a smaller version of that coffee table in her small apartment that 2 can eat at. She has found it very useful.
Spacers can be made to accommodate any slant to make the top level. I’ve seen a slim box-like top that slipped over a similar keyboard. Made of nicely finished matching wood, it made the keyboard function as a side table while completely protecting it. The bottomless box was deep enough that it hid the multiple levels of the keyboard.
