Where are you from: NYT Dialect Quiz

What is funny about this is that it placed me at the right place but the other two seem so differnet !

I got three cities where neither I nor my ancestors lived, although the places where I have lived are in the “warmer” parts of the map.

Because that’s the correct term for that night, of course.

One of the three most similar cities is where I was born - but I only lived there six weeks. My mother, however, grew up there so I likely have her speech patterns. The area where I lived until age six is orangish; the area I lived after that is blue.

When and how we develop language is fascinating. You actually pick up language more from your peers than your parents (although my map was also where my parents are from) which is why the children of immigrants don’t have their parents’ accents.

It also depends on your age when you move. My younger sister and I moved to Canada when we were 8 & 11. She has a Canadian accent and I do not.

Puts me exactly where I live, have lived.

Although they could have asked me what I call a carbonated beverage and called it a day

Pretty good since I’m from Austin.

I’m getting Madison WI and Rockford IL.

I’ve got the whole east cost .

It put me in Yonkers, NY – which is halfway between where I grew up, and where I live now.

It puts me in San Francisco…and I live in the Bay Area.

Buffalo, Rochester or Springfield. I’m not from any of those places and have never lived in any of those places. Does being an hour and 15 minutes from Springfield count? Guess so…

This is fun – I have done it a few times over the years. This time I get a hybrid of “a couple hundred miles from where I grew up,” close to where my parents grew up, and ?? Texas ?? – must be my y’alls showing.

Nearly the same. Pegged me as Detroit and I grew up 30ish miles from there!

I’ve done this before but I don’t remember it ever being so accurate. It put me exactly in the three city metropolitan area where I’ve lived for the last 40+ years. Or, alternatively, across the country in Fresno CA. Go figure.

It accurately puts me between Boston and Worcester, MA. I am impressed.

Well, I’m Honolulu, Newark & Seattle—one out of three. Haha!

My closest cities were in New Jersey. However, the area of upstate NY where I actually grew up is roughly as strong, and stronger than the overwhelming majority of other ares. I consider this an accurate result.

Boston, Worcester, Providence

No surprise, I guess.

Although TiL that there are liquor stores (or as I say, packies) with drive throughs

I’ve done this before. It puts me as Modesto, Sacramento, Santa Rosa and I never lived there. I lived 30 years in Southern California and then a variety of places, Mid-Atlantic, Plains, Northwest. I’ve played with it too and can’t figure out what would need to change to get me LA or San Diego. I would like the option of “a Coke or something” for carbonated beverages. That’s how we always said it, never just “a Coke”. Anyone get Southern California?
