Where are you from: NYT Dialect Quiz

My spouse took the survey and he had one bright/dark red state…Michigan with the city he grew up in selected as the most likely. He asked me where my results were and I said I’d sent them to him when he sent the link. He laughed because he thought mine was the generic map because it gave me such a broad range in comparison to his!

You can google and hear the 3 pronunciations. Apparently those in the northeast have more distinctive vowel sounds than other areas of the country. I took a phonics class in college, the professor would make students pronounce a word to verify the word was spelled correctly on an exam. Students from different areas would have different answers. Being from NJ Mary/merry/marry have different pronunciations.

The one term that put me correctly smack dab in Massachusetts was calling a traffic circle a “rotary”–apparently a term not used anywhere else???

I call it a rotary since I had never seen one before moving to MA. But apparently my use of “crawdad” and “LAWyer” overwhelmed that and correctly placed me in the Ozarks.

As expected, I confused it. I have lived in the midwest(ages 6mos old -9yrs), the deep south(9-15), NC(15-26), VA since. This thing says I am either from Yonkers(i didnt even know where that was for sure), or Ft Lauderdale.
Parents were plains-midwestern /chicago suburban …
I was however… born in the great state of NJ, small ruralish town not a classic NY suburb.
My map is deep blue everywhere but the red spots of yonkers and FL.

It appears from the comments that not all of us got the same questions. I never saw a question about a “round about”, nor a question about the night before Halloween (isn’t that what Mischief Night is?)

I got the night before Halloween question (devils night), but I didn’t get the traffic circle or shoes questions. Interesting.

I didn’t get that question, but I call it a round-about.

Did anyone get the question about what you call it when the sun shines but it’s still raining?

For me, it’s a sun shower, but there are some very colorful alternatives!

Of course they do!! Totally distinct😊.

I’ve taken the quiz three times and most questions stay the same, but there are a few that rotate. I have seen everything mentioned above.

I put the link on a private mode page so that I could retake the test without it knowing that I’d already taken it. I got a bunch more questions, including all of the questions discussed here. Same outcome!

Same here.

I answered “rotary” each time, still smack dab in Detroit. My telling words were:

We say traffic circle in these parts.

Oh cool! I mostly get blank looks when I talk to anyone out of state.

I thought Goosie Night was the Northern NJ term?

Some tiny area of Bergen County apparently. I grew up on the northern Shore, and live in Essex County, and both places say Mischief Night. I have read about “Goosey Night” a couple times, but never heard anyone actually use it.

I have heard of Jackson Whites but only because of Weird New Jersey. i have no opinion on the Taylor ham/ pork roll “controversy” because it didn’t exist until the Internet I’m pretty sure.

But yes, Jersey Strong!
