Yes I am aware that Hampton is a HBCU. I have a friend that goes there and I know that a 29 ACT score will get you free Tuition and also free Room & Board.

I realize that it’s been a while since I’ve posted on this thread, but I’ve pretty much narrowed my top two choices to University of South Carolina and University of Illinois. But lately I’ve been freaking out that I won’t get into U of I’s business school since the average ACT for business is 29-32 and I only have a 29. I did have an internship over the summer and have a 3.97 uw 4.38 w GPA. Can anyone give me any advice as to the chances of me getting in to this program!? IM FREAKING OUTTTT haha

One does not have to be black to attend an HBU, just as one does not have to be white to attend a predominantly white university.

Nikkki you need to start a new thread in the “chances” forum to get an answer to your question. The Financial Aid forum is just not the right place to ask for that.

Since you are not in state at SC, will money (OOS tuition) be an issue for you/your family? Since your original posting, have you considered or did you retake the SAT/ACT

Nickiii

Is there no longer a concern about getting much merit aid? Do you have funds to pay for college now?

Well there is, sorta, but U of I (I’m from Illinois) and University of South Carolina are both in my price range because of the scholarships offered at South Carolina.

At least in Illinois your travel costs won’t be high. And the tuition is fixed, though fees and rm/bd go up year to year. Are your parents more willing to pay the money for the familiar UIUC than other places? Business is currently a bit over $32K when add books to tuition/fees/rm/bd. Hard to get scholarships there to lower cost unless you have top stats. There are the Provost and President’s awards, but so many high stat engineering kids. Even in business, that darned test score of yours could hold you back from getting departmental scholarships. Too bad, but once you are there, can just work hard and prove yourself, maybe get scholarships later. Unless you have other attributes- crazy ECs or other hook you aren’t telling about?

I’m just worried I won’t even get into U of I. The only other “hook” is that I completed a paid summer internship at a marketing firm over the summer.

Well, no matter what they’ll probably let you in. But if they aren’t quite sure of you, they’ll put you into ‘division of general studies’ where you work hard to compile a good record, take gen eds, etc. and hope that after a year when you again apply to business, they l take you then. I don’t know how hard that is. For engineering I hear it is quite difficult. If that happens to you at decision time you can ask them the likelihood of gaining business admission later, profile and percentage of kids who get in. You may be good. Your GPA must be above 75th percentile, though test is below 25th, is that right? Don’t know how they balance that out. Just be glad you aren’t applying to engineering.

Ya that’s true, thanks. Hopefully my GPA will balance with the ACT. And your right, however I don’t think I am willing to attend U of I without knowing for certain I am in the business program right away.
