<p>Try the “Seasonless” dress or the “Surplice” dress (shown in red but comes in black) on the Talbot’s website (sorry, I am link impaired). Both have classic styling, not matronly, and can be worn for many occasions. Talbot’s quality is good. For her chamber singer group’s competition in Europe, D had to buy a long black dress from one of the companies that supplies choir clothing–it was a nasty cheap polyester and badly made. Packable yes, but otherwise a terrible garment that she will never be able to use for any other purpose. I’d avoid that sort of thing.</p>

<p>Weird as it sounds, look at Target online. I got a very cute black knit dress there and it does not look cheap. There are several choices right now; one is only $19–short sleeves and scoop neck.</p>

<p>Another suggestion… if she has enough time, can she find a pattern and tailor to make one for her? This will give her many more options and a fit that can’t be beat. You might even be able to do a cursory search on line for some patterns and send them her way.</p>

<p>I have to second (third) the Travelsmith dress. I have a Travelsmith basic black dress in my closet now. It’s lasted well, washes well, travels well, and is so innocuous that I can wear it three days in a row and no one notices.</p>
