<p>Observations: I was stunned by UMCP decision. Clearly no longer a safety for most applicants, even in state. Fall admission from S’s HS required 3.6 - 3.7 UW. Tulane -apply as early as possible for best results. Excellent financial aid packages from American, COW and Tulane; Fordham, not so good. Still waiting on others. Very good experience with admissions staff at COW and Tulane. S was not interested in COW until he visited on his way to Kenyon. Visit made a big impression on both S and me. If your student is looking at LACs, give it some consideration.</p>
<p>caddis, last year’s UMCP average admit had a 2050 SAT and 4.05 W. Many kids from our neighborhood HS didn’t even apply. We have friends whose S got into FSU, Penn State/UP engineering, Ohio State, Clemson, Kent State, Towson and Salisbury and was turned down at UMCP. Parents were not happy to be forced to pay OOS so the S could pursue his engineering school plans. </p>
<p>We strongly suspected S2 (stats upthread) he would not get into Honors at UMCP. (We were correct.) He knows some full IB folks who got Spring admits. Stunning. </p>
<p>S2’s GC told the IB kids that if they did not get their UMCP apps in by the priority deadline, forget about it. Told the tale of a 2200+, 3.8 UW full IB student who applied in January and was rejected.</p>
<p>My 2011 D was accepted to Mount Holyoke and Agnes Scott, as well as some public safeties. Rejected by Bryn Mawr and Vassar and mid-tier UCs.
3.45uw/3.65w gpa with a strong upward trend, 2100+ SAT, good ECs, and a good but risky essay.</p>
<p>UCSD-waitlisted, d with same stats got in 3 years ago and will grad.</p>

<p>The UC dream next year and beyond for cal. res. is over due to the 9% ELC bump. Look out, here comes a ton of bright Cal. kids as oos next year.</p>
<p>D had 3.6 UW, maybe top 25% of class at best, 31 ACT. Good rigor but not unusual. Strong ECs but nothing that would really hook. Nice essays and recs, but again nothing that would knock her into a new dimension.</p>
<p>Remember she is a theatre kid whose list reflected her desire to get into a BFA program.</p>

<p>We have no way of knowing if she would have gotten in academically to BU or CMU because her admission was so tied to the theatre audition. I’d like to think she would have been accepted academically at least to BU.</p>
<p>Her frontrunners are Adelphi, Bard and UMinn. She’s going to stay on the Brandeis waitlist, but decline Lawrence’s.</p>

<p>PSU was out of reach financially due to OOS & OSU was eliminated due to specifics with her program of choice. Attending Univ of Cincinnati</p>
<p>Son is 3.9 W, about 3.5 UW, top 12% of class, 1960 SAT. 1 AP, reasonable EC’s, large suburban public HS. Interested in engineering (not sure what kind).</p>
<p>Accepted (all for engineering): UMass Amherst (in-state, with Adams Scholarship–about $1,700); U Delaware (OOS with merit aid), UConn (OOS-no aid), and Syracuse (with small merit scholarship that doesn’t put much of a dent in the COA).</p>

<p>Pending: Duke (we assume it’s a “no”)</p>
<p>It’s down to a choice between UMass and Delaware. He’s leaning towards UMass, but we’re going down to take another look at Delaware. If he really wants to go Delaware, I’d be willing to pay the extra $10K or so a year to give him the experience of going to college out of state. Also, I have some concerns about UMass’ finances and Delaware seems to be in better shape financially. But ultimately it’s his choice.</p>
