Where did your 3.3-3.6 GPA child get in?

Sorry, was talking about Univ of Denver specifically. She is just so happy about getting accepted because we thought it was an academic reach.

Did you consider Drexel? They also give merit $$$…but I don’t know their deadlines.

UMD is a tough admit for engineering these days. Average stats these days are around 2200 SAT and 4.05 weighted, which probably makes it a little reachy for your S, but definitely possible.

We visited Drexel last summer. That is smack in the city of Philly…don’t know if it’s an option for you or not…BU is also smack in Boston…don’t know if you looked at BU…

A suggestion for a safety could be University of Hartford Honors program…

also UCONN ccould be another option…

my S2 is a h.s. Junior and we’ll be sifting through many of the same choices. His weighted GPA is a 3.7…PSAT not great…want him to break the 1800 level. His top choice at the moment is WPI.

Coralbrook, my D was so excited to get into DU too, since it’s such a reach. I was astonished that she got a scholarship. Sadly it’s not nearly enough to make it possible to attend. My hopes are pinned on the FAFSA and need based aid  Good luck to you and your daughter!

Well, I’ll keep you posted about our results and whether she can attend. We have not visited yet, waiting for the Pioneer Day invite for accepted students. Have you visited? There aren’t very many visit reports that would help us.

She was admitted into film major, we think that might have been her saving grace because I’m sure it is very competitive for International Relations and Business.

Good collaborative effort with son this evening. We winnowed the list down to 3 reach, 3 match, and 3 safety schools. Dropped several schools from further consideration and added one in thanks to ConfusedMominMA suggestions.

CSNChief- double check UMass Amherst’s info. In your above post you list their app deadline as being 2/15, I believe it is 1/15.

You are correct. I had placed it incorrectly on my tracking spreadsheet. Good catch.

CSNChief-we got acceptance to Western New England yesterday and 14k/yr. definitely a safety but also has ROTC right on campus (UMass Lowell and Roger Williams do not have ROTC on their campuses so that is a black mark against those 2 schools in my son’s eyes)

S accepted at University of Maine College of Engineering

Is anyone on here looking at schools in Virginia? For a variety of reasons, we would like S14 to stay in-state. One is a medical reason, which while it may be under control, also makes me want him somewhat near a hospital. Lovely, right? I am not mentioning that to him. He isn’t a fan of mom’s paranoia…
Has not taken SAT yet. Got about 1550 on PSAT with no prep whatsoever. He is taking a class now- same one raised his sister over 500 points and while I’m not expecting that, I’m a assuming he can get to roughly 1800/2400 and hopefully 1200/ 1600. Issue is GPA. Overall, through tenth grade, its a 3.25 Laziness led to a terrible grade in 8th grade (D+) which is really pulling his GPA down and obviously as more classes are completed that should be ā€˜diluted’. Freshman year was a 3.28, all regular classes. Sophomore a 3.52, with two honors and 1AP class. This year he has 2 APs, first quarter was 3.7 or so. This quarter looks to be lower but the medical thing popped up and he also had a concussion which is going on 7 weeks now. Hoping he can rebound… Has sports, EC volunteering, and music to list. Also hoping colleges will see the trend- and that he holds it- and forgive him some for being unfocused in 8th grade.
He loves JMU. I’ve suggested George Mason, Christopher Newport, and Old Dominion as a safety. Of course, he’s only excited about JMU, but we have only toured it, and will be seeing the rest. He seems to be looking into education in some form as a career.
Suggestions, thoughts? I’m ok with OOS as long as its not too far and assuming he could get $ to reduce the cost to around IS, as we will likely eventually have three in college at the same time.

^i don’t think 8th grade will count towards GPA. 8th grade is not high school.

His grades from 8th grade have no bearing on his GPA for college admission. Some colleges don’t even count a kid’s freshman year grades.

Have you considered University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg?

Of course 8th grade grades can count on HS transcripts! Why in the world would people say ā€œthey have no bearing.ā€
Classes like Algebra 1, or any advanced Science (usually taken in 9th grade) or an advanced language MOST DEFINITELY show up on a HS transcript and absolutely count towards college admissions.

(Hi Wahoo!) :)

Transcript contents must vary from district to district or state to state. Courses taken in the 8th grade, no matter the level, do not appear on the transcripts from the high school where I am an employee.
