I read every single post (shows you what parents have to do on a Saturday night…) and I have to say that pimpdaddy is ill-informed as to Stanford athletics. For the size of the school and the academic standards, there is just no way Stanford should be as athletically successful as it is.

I read a magazine article somewhere about how Mr. and Mrs. Stanford sat in the waiting room of the president of Harvard for hours, he then condescendingly dismissing the couple who asked if they could ‘do something’ for the school in memory of their dead son (Leland Stanford died of typhoid fever, I believe, at a young age – he was their only child). The Harvard prez thought they wanted a statue or something – they wanted to build buildings, but he never let them plead their case; he judged them by their plain appearance and their unprepossessing demeanor.

So the Stanfords traveled west and bought up some land. From everything I’ve heard, they did quite well with their investment.

I suspect comparing Stanford to the Ivies may be apples to oranges – how fortunate for all you young people that you live in a country so vast and so blessed that you have such an abundance of educational opportunities.

That’s a really interesting story! You’re right, there really is no point in trying to compare them. All of the Ivies, plus Stanford, plus many other schools in this nation are amazing schools and we should feel fortunate that we get these opportunities.
