Why? How much different is it compared to other small town schools?
It’s a polarizing campus in my opinion. I’d say depressing. That was 1995 when I first visited. In 2018 I took my son and he couldn’t wait to get out. Others on here have agreed but others have disagreed and love it. Versus a Purdue, for example, I’d say run down. Again my opinion. Not fact.
I would not chance spending four years, day after day there, without making sure it will work for you.
What major is his preferred major, or is he somewhat undecided?
Champaign and Urbana has a combined population over 200,000. I don’t think that is “small town”. Is it a big city like Seattle? No, but it is a small city surrounded by rural area. I don’t find it run down or depressing.
I think visiting is a great idea, for any college.
