Where to buy a nice suit in Columbus ,Ohio ?

A J Crew Ludlow suit is around 625 ! Surely suits out there can be found around the 350 range- am I unrealistic ?

Yes, fauxmaven. As has been suggested uptrhead, between Nordstrom, Macy’s and the Men’s Wearhouse, you should be able to find a decent suit within your price range. I am not quite sure why you think Columbus is so different from anywhere else.

There is a difference in suits. Any suit though will look lousy if it is not fitted properly. Our former Florida governor needs a better tailor…and a shoeshine kit!

No Ann Taylor does not make men’s suits. I was responding to the prior post about stores that give teachers discounts.

Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack (none of the latter in Columbus) are good choices. Nordstrom credit and debit (tied to your normal checking account) card holders get $100 in alterations free each year. Here in the Seattle, the tailors at Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores often have 15-30 years experience. The employees in the suit department are very knowledgeable.

If he’s ever in Phoenix, Nordstrom Last Chance has an assortment of suits and sport coats sold as-is for very good deals. I got a $1500+ suit ($600 if you caught the once a year sale) that needs very few alterations for $100. I’m interviewing for finance-type positions, so a good suit helps a lot.

I see that Easton Mall has a Nordstrom. We will go there ,Macy’s because we have coupons and Men’s Warehouse . Thank you all .

Faux…judging from your questions, it sounds like you do NOT live near Columbus. Are you planning a special trip there to shop for a suit? When my son got his first suit on his own, he didn’t have us with him.

It might be easier to have your son come to your city where you are familiar with the men’s clothing stores.

As the mother of a 19 yr. old son, I know a couple yrs. back when our son was getting ready for prom we purchased a nice suit for him rather than renting a tux; he was going to be in engineering at college the next fall and knew he would also need it for interviews, etc. Looked first at JCP here in Indpl’s but didn’t find much, especially in the slimmer cut for young men. Then went to Macy’s in the same mall and had much better luck. Purchased him a Tommy Hilfiger navy suit cut for young men and have been extrememly pleased with it. It was
on sale and very reasonable. They also had a MUCH bigger selection than JCP did, and we’re on the north side of Indy which is more upscale and has a larger mall.

Too bad Syms went out of business. They had great deals on suits.

My now college grad “let” me take him on one last “shopping for work clothes” expedition, which consisted of my dropping him off at Macys with the sales ads/coupons, etc in hand, and I came back when he had some on that he wanted me to see, and then of course pay for. That was our last parent/child shopping expedition. He plans to do it on is own from this point out. He did like what he got at macys and really appreciated the sales staff assistance as he needs slim and likes certain styles (ie no pocket on the dress shirt, etc). He found some nice stuff at reasonable prices.

We have gotten DS some mighty nice dress clothes in excellent condition…at goodwill. His Ralph Lauren suit came from Kohls. The key is the fit. The most expensive suit on the market will look awful if it’s not tailored well.

^ Isn’t it always about “fit” on cc?? ;)

I’ve never had a good experience buying a suit at a department store. The higher-end stores are always pushing their designer labels and you’re paying more for the label than for the mass-produced product. The lower-end stores are pushing cheap junk. And it’s all just off-the-rack stuff on which they’ll do a few quick alterations and call it a fit. A suit is all about fit, and the fit is all about tailoring. Any off-the-rack suit looks good on an Italian model, but many (most?) of us aren’t built like Italian models. So it’s not necessarily just a question of doing alterations; the question is, is the suit itself a good fit for the body type, and beyond the body type, for the particular body?

The men’s clothing specialty chains–Men’s Wearhouse, Jos. A Bank, Brooks Brothers–are a little better, but you still fell like they’re trying to fit you into their inventory rather than vice versa.

There’s a dying institution in American life, the old-fashioned men’s haberdashery, built on personal service, attention to detail, and expert tailoring, up to and including custom-made suits if that is necessary. There used to be 2 or 3 or half a dozen of these places in every major city; mostly they’re gone now. The business model probably doesn’t work anymore in most places, but we still have one in downtown St. Paul, Heimie’s Haberdashery. (I know, the name sounds like a stereotype, but it’s a real place, I’m not making this up). The service is outstanding and so is the tailoring, and it’s not rock-bottom cheap, but you come away feeling like you got what you paid for. The place gets rave reviews, just google it or check it out on Yelp. That’s the place I’m going for my next suit, and if I needed to buy a suit somewhere else, I’d look for the nearest place that was most like Heimie’s.

Thumper- My son is WAITING for me to come to Ohio to buy his suit .He doesn’t come home much, and I haven’t seen him since last Nov !We planned this trip a few months back ,and I am anxious to see OSU . Pizzagirl-I am a coastal girl ,and have seen little of of Middle Earth ,so that is why I am unsure about what Ohio will offer us .

I promise you Ohio is not all Amish. :). You will find Columbus to be a large but easy to maneuver city with as much shopping and dining as you care to have!!! Be sure to explore more than just the campus area!!!

There are tons of places to buy nice suits in Columbus. Nordstrom, Brooks Brothers. Go to a place that provides tailoring; don’t buy off the rack at an outlet store. The money you might save will have to be spent getting the suit tailored off-premises.

Enjoy Columbus! If you want restaurant recommendations, just shoot me a PM!

I agree with Pizzagirl about buying quality. When my son was a senior in HS, I bought him a nice Italian suit on sale to bring to college years ago. He wore that to all his on campus functions including job interviews and is still one of his favorite suits to wear now.
Nordstroms, Macy’s and Brooks Brothers have good quality suits.

DS has a black suit…bought at JCP at LEAST 35 years ago. It’s a long story but it was given to DS about 11 years ago and is still in excellent shape. The key to its longevity is that it gets cleaned on a regular basis. DS is a musician, and the suit gets a lot of use.

If you really want to save some real money then shop online at ebay, they offers great deals and direct bargains online. If not then J.C. Penny has always something on sale for college students. You can get one on upto 20% off at Penny, if lucky.

All the best.

Hopefully the OP found a suit EIGHT months ago!
