My D doesn’t even know what an ethernet cable is and she certainly didn’t take one to college.
Keep your purchases to a minimum, you’ll have limited storage and you have to deal with it all at the start of summer.
Any of the places mentioned are fine, shop where it’s convenient, whether online or in person. You’ll be able to do more shopping as needed.
I definitely agree with taking stuff from home first.
My D and her roommates do not have a micro or fridge in their room. Their dorm has a well equipped kitchen with cupboard and fridge space for each student.
Your mileage may vary. Both of my kids were using an Ethernet cable because campus wifi was often overloaded.
You do not need two sets of sheets. Stores will have college sales this summer. BB&B can be good with coupons. Penneys, Macys, Target other stores also good for bedding and towels. Ditto on limiting purchases- even a large dorm room is not that large. Do catch the back to school supply sales- buy more than you need of disposables as they can be used in the future- prices always best before fall. You know your learning style by now.
I wouldn’t recommend this. You’re going to have to sleep in your bed at home during breaks, and carrying the comforter back and forth would be inconvenient unless you have your own car.
It depends on what you do in the bed. Yes, that. And also if you sit on it and eat stuff because there isn’t anywhere else to sit.
My kids took the comforters off their beds. It’s not like we didn’t have other bed coverings to put on the home beds. They didn’t have to sleep uncovered. They didn’t carry the comforter back and forth during each vacation.
They also took old towels from our linen closets. That didn’t mean they didn’t have towels when they came home! DH and I moved our older towels to their linen closet and WE got nice new ones.
@thumper1, it would never have occurred to me that a family might have extra comforters. We certainly never did. Still don’t.
Different lifestyles, I guess.
We got a basic twin comforter on sale for college. D got a duvet cover for it and had two twin XL sheet sets ($16 at Target, lasted three years at least). In case she spilled something on her bed.
The duvet cover fit in the college washer, the comforter did not.
When she moved off campus she got a bigger bed and comforter.
Two bath towels on sale for $5 at JCPENNEY. Some wash cloths, a fleece throw, a bed rest pillow.
As others have said TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Home Goods will soon be stocking for dorm linens. I have also always found good deals on linens at Ross. Just have to dig a little! All also have a nicer quality of towels for less than dept stores. If you buy the same color tone for sheets as towels they can go in the same load. A second set is nice if one gets dirty unexpectantly and might be a bit before you can get to the laundry. Twin sheets aren’t hard to store.
Walmart and Target tend to run cheaper than BB&B, usually always pricier than the above ^^^.
Enjoy SD!
Everything goes in one load. Color catchers.
One set of anything bedding.
Just saying!
Lucky if it ever gets done.
Agree that one set of bedding that fits the bed the student will be sleeping in is fine. If the sheets aren’t clean, the kiddo will likely just sleep in any sleeping bag s/he can scrounge. I bought a spare set of bedding for my kids–it was rarely (if ever) used. If I were doing it over, I wouldn’t bother and think less is better, especially for storing over the summer and tiny bedrooms the students share (when they’re mostly used to their own bedrooms).
This is probably a dumb question, but where do you put your toothbrush? Do you just get a toothbrush holder and keep it in your room? I’ll probably have a suite-style dorm but I don’t want to put it in the bathroom since I read that toilet water moves around the room when you flush and it grosses me out, and if I have a community-style room I wouldn’t even have a bathroom to put it in…I keep it in a drawer at home so I’ve never had to think about it.
You can buy a plastic case to hold a toothbrush. It’s also common to have a caddy for things like toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo that you can keep in your room and carry into the bathroom. But whether you need that depends on storage space in the bathroom and how many people are sharing it.
The suite style bathroom my son shares, has the shower and toilet separate from the sink which is helpful when both of the roomates try to get ready.
He has an over the door shoe organizer over their bathroom door to keep toletries in.
My D got a plastic shower caddy and kept her toiletries and toothbrush in it, it had separate compartments.
You will figure it out. There is Amazon student prime which is free for 6 months, you can order things that you need later.
Stores and schools will have lists of things you may want. Pay attention to what your specific dorm provides. Some things will depend on the bathroom situation- ensuite or down the hall. Try looking at photos from the dorm you get on your school’s housing website. Find out dimensions of closets- could be too short for some added shelving units. Find out locking for a drawer. You do not need everything advertised on college dorm lists, btw.
We got a comforter for son- no extras at home. Sheets and mattress pads need to fit the bed- XL usually. Regular twin blankets and comforters work fine. Remember- extras need storage space which is usually sparse.
