Which college to SIR to? Waitlist? Best out of the options? CA

Low income family, however with FAFSA and student loans, Price is irreverent when getting an education. But where do I go that will best expand my reach in communities so I can chase my ambitious goal of changing the world?

My Order of Preference:

  1. University of San Francisco : Waitlisted - Poli Sci (Pros Beautiful Campus, Diverse, Good Internships, Good Jesuit Catholic Education, Endless possibilities in my opinion. Con: Waitlisted)

  2. University of the Pacific : Accepted - Philosophy (Pros: Beautiful campus, Diverse Cons: Far, Location, Known for Prepharm and PreDent. Not much known about Philosophy/Political Science…)

  3. UC Santa Cruz : Waitlisted - Poli Sci

  4. UC Riverside : Accepted - Poly Sci (Pro: UC Brand Name… Con: Far)

  5. UC Merced : Pending? as of 3/20/18 - Poly Sci (Pro UC, Used to live around area, Will live off campus due to own house nearby Con: Internship opportunisties not alot due to area.)

  6. SJSU : Accepted - Poly Sci (Pro: Close to home, Safety School Con: Close to home, is everyone’s safety school, Might not get my full potential or take it seriously)

Im thinking about SIR a UC and also to UOP (allowed since UOP is private and not a UC) while I wait to get off the waitlist for USF.

The reason being is UCR accepted me even though i told them i was not going to pass an excess 4th year math course back in Feb. which they said will just result in a re-review. So possible getting rescinded, or not which I don’t like uncertainty hence while two SIRs. UOP, USF, SJSU, Won’t rescind me on this case. Even then UOP seems to me a great school to go to over UCR. Im still hoping to learn more about their Philosophy program however.

You can only SIR to one school at a time.

You can only borrow up to $5,500 the first year without a cosigner. Add a few thousand from work earnings or work study to get your price limit if your parents can contribute nothing.

What is the net price of each school after subtracting grants and scholarships (not loans) from the cost of attendance?

UOP philosophy looks rather limited compared to UCR philosophy:

you should only SIR one school. It is really tough to ratioalize UOP at full price. It certainly isn’t worth 2 or 3x your other options and a big pile of debt. UCR sounds like the perfect spot to save while you wait for the wait-lists to shake out…

Another vote for holding your spot at UCR.

Update: Accepted into UCM for Poli Sci., ---- UOP ranks 110 on US News report while UCR at 126, and UOP is closer to home and i just like the campus and weather more… jsut a factor in my current considerations right now. I really want to stay in Norcal so I can vist family once inwhile. But thank you for your feedback! Anymore from others would be much appriciated as well

One of your opening assertions is patently wrong - the price of your education is hugely relevant, especially if you are using borrowed money.

Most of the people i know who graduated from UOP graduated with a HUGE pile of debt, which they found to be a big burden as they began their career. They liked the school but, hate the student loan payment for many years to follow. I know 2 people who got their scholarships pulled after freshman year, one one transferred to Sac State, the other’s parents had the means to pay the full bill.

If you will go into debt for UOP, it simply isn’t worth the price.

It is like buying a Porsche when a Sentra is all you need.

What is the actual net price of each school after grants and scholarships (not loans)?

NPCs indicate for a student living on campus from a low income family (EFC = $0, parent income $25,000):

UOP: $22,688
USF: $19,890
UCSC: $9,500-$12,500
UCR: $9,300
UCM: $8,500-$9,500
SJSU: $12,824

You can borrow $5,500 (federal direct loan) without a cosigner. The remaining amounts would be realistic to earn from part time and summer work at the UCs, marginal at SJSU (unless you can commute from your parents’ place to lower the cost), and unrealistic at UOP and USF, if your actual financial aid offers are similar to the net price calculator results.

Update: Since you guys requested $$$ info.

  1. USF offered spot for Spring Admission (Will have to take CC classes and join USF in Spring and will receieve FA by April 20, Still on wait list for Fall)
  2. UOP Est. Tutition 61k, Received 44k in FA, 49K total with loans/Workstudy - Will pay $13k for first year after FA
  3. UCR Full Ride
  4. UCM Full Ride
  5. SJSU Full Ride
  6. UCSC Waitlisted

Thoughts?

My $.02: I can’t see any upside to paying for UOP. Lots of good choices on your list, congrats!

Can’t see why UOP is worth $17k per year when UCR, UCM, and SJSU are full ride. Especially if most of that $17k per year ($68k after four years) is loans.

Congrats! I agree ,no reason to pay for UOP when you have those other options in hand. I also don’t think USF is worth the semester delay.

You have received expert advice from the regulars here above! Do one of the FULL RIDES and take a tour of each location you are serious about! Congratulations on getting those!
