Which colleges should I aim for? 3.5 GPA, top 15%, 1500+ SAT

An EFC of $10k is way too high for Questbridge.

No, it’s really not…although most QB finalists do have EFCs of zero, or close to it. Many families with up to $65K income (QB’s unofficial income cap) have EFCs $10K or greater.

Adding…the poster said her family could afford $10,000 a year for college. She did not say this was her EFC. For all we know, her EFC is $50,000, or $500. That info isn’t here.

Its not just 65k, its 65k with a family of four. To get to $10k EFC you would need to have more than minimal assets or large savings.

If OP truly has an EFC of 10k Questbridge would not be the way to go, especially since they seem to have other, better avenues of getting aid, such as soccer recruitment.

Yes, definitely still need more details to make good recommendations.

The problem with Wisconsin was I clicked one box wrong. This is the first time something like this happened to me running the NPC, so don’t worry. Wisconsin isn’t that ā€žcheapā€œ anymorešŸ˜…
And yes my parents have helped me

(I figured that’s what had happened for UWisconsin, that’s why I said it didn’t invalidate the Amherst and Yale calculators.)

Please provide your EFC (use FAFSA4caster).
Is your family’s income 65K and below?
How many people in your family?
Do your parents own a business or a farm?
Are they divorced?

Look at the Amherst soccer page (stats, videos, etc, etc).

I know. Yes, I was raised by a single mother and she’s US American

DI soccer recruitment tends to not equal much in the way of athletic scholarship aid, it is common to receive only 1/4 or 1/2 tuition. Again, we need more info on the family’s EFC (which we will know the ballpark once OP reports some NPC results from meet full need schools like Yale and Amherst)

Give me some time with the EFC, I’ll post it here. My parents are separated and my family income is by far under 65,000
I live together with my mother and we basically don’t own anything.

For those schools like Amherst and Yale, they use the CSS Profile and there is an expectation that your bio dad will contribute to your college costs. Are you on contact with him?

When you run the net price calculators, if they don’t ask if your parent is a single parent, the results will be off.

Yes, I have a normal son-dad relationship with my father

However, for ā€œgenerous need based aidā€ the form used is the CSS in addition to the FAFSA. if you had contact with your father in the past couple years or if you can’t prove (school headteacher, religious community leader, doctor… ) that he’s had no contact with you, his income will be factored into what you should pay, and if he remarried his spouse’s income will be added. That’s why all this matters.
Add your father’s income to your mother’s income when filling out the npc (and your father’s spouse income too if he remarried)…

The FAFSA will only take your mother’s income into account but FAFSA only schools don’t meet need.

The net price calculators are not typically setup for single parents with a non-custodial parent.

Your dad will be expected to complete the non-custodial parent Profile for schools like Yale and Amherst. The results of that NPC won’t be accurate.

Your mom’s income, and your dad’s income will be considered for any college that uses the CSS Profile and requires the non-custodial parent form.

I did the Yale NPC and the EFC is 4500$, I included also my fathers earnings etc.

Is your father married?if so, did you include his spouses income?

Also, simply including his income on the NPC won’t make it accurate.

Are your parents U.S. citizens???

Yale is very generous with need based aid. This should not be your acid test for college affordability in this country. Your U Wisconsin result likely is more accurate generally…because the vast majority of colleges do not meet full need…and are not as generous as Yale.

Both of my parents are NOT married, only seperated from each other. My mother, the parent where I live is US american, my father is german

Except for University of Chicago…Fafsa only with a very short Chicago form. No non-custodial parent info.

Re: Vanderbilt. The non-custodial parent profile is not required, IIRC. But the school reserves the right to ask for additional information.

Guys, just tell me what is the next step? What am I supposed to do now? Which information do you need, etc
