yikes. my sis lives in the area; shes mentioned rising rents; i just looked at some of the offerings – 200 sq studios are going for $2000/month. crazy! good luck to your kids though; great place to be!
My D lived at Negev (referenced back around post 9 or so) until March and loved it. If someone thinks their S or D might be interested, I’m sure she’d be happy to speak with them. She and 7 others she met at Negev (after about 6 months–she wasn’t ready to go but others were and this was “her group”) moved into a house in the Mission and she’s even happier now.
The people who own Negev have 3 houses; one of which is a 'hacker/programmer" house and the other two are not. My D is not a programmer and was not interested in that house. She made many friends while living there; something like 22 of them formed a kickball team and play in a league every Sunday. Negev is a great option for a more extroverted person (people around all the time) who would like to jump into a community. My D told me about Family Dinner every Sunday, tech talk Tuesday nights, etc. Once a month there’s a party and, the month before my D moved in, one of the young women who lived there was German and had never been to a prom/didn’t really understand the concept so the theme of the monthly party was ‘prom’. Everyone who lives there is on a text/FB thread and my D said she could have gone out every night if she wanted to. Honestly, I thought it was a great option for a young person new to SF. We were very disappointed when we read about the owners and the issue that was referenced in the article posted upthread. My D can speak to the owner and how much of an influence he is/isn’t in terms of living at Negev. It was a wonderful way for my D to make the move to SF; not sure it’s an ideal long term solution but it opened up many opportunities for her to meet new people and discover new options.
Thanks for that great info, @collage1! I wonder if that is the place my son will be staying at. That actually does seem like a great way to meet people if you’re social, and an excellent way to find some people who might be looking for roommates and in the same situation as you are.
Hi, I’m the original poster on this thread and I wanted to stop back in to let you all know that my son was successful in finding a place on his visit to San Francisco. He will be moving into one of the communities known as Build Campus http://buildcampus.com/communities/. It sound like it’s somewhat similar to the Negev that was posted above – a small community of people living together with your own private room but sharing common living space and participating in some shared activities. It’s perfect for him!
The first one he applied to had too many males, but he ended up in his second choice. There’s a screening process and then essentially a vote by the current tenants of the particular community whether to let you join after hanging out with them for a while. He’s now done with applying for things and he’s done with dealing with crazy Craigslist posters. Thank you all for your help in narrowing the search area.
which neighborhood did he get in?
That’s funny, blackeyedsusan, my son just mentioned that place, but he thought there was a rather involved process and took some time. He only had one day in SF after he accepted the job. But it sounds like your son had enough time to do it. What a relief that’s all done! Maybe our kids will end up being in the same house, eventually, wouldn’t that be funny.
Glad your son was able to find something that works for him, blackeyedsusan.
