UNC is fairly liberal, especially for North Carolina.

Yes, UNC is rather liberal. Jesse Helms famously said that NC didn’t need a state zoo when they could just build a fence around Chapel Hill. Conservative students are a minority, and speakers like Tancredo and Horowitz have gotten a tremendous amount of backlash on campus.

Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt said the culture of Chapel Hill embraces a diversity of political thought. “We have a strong tradition in North Carolina — particularly in Chapel Hill — of being open to multiple perspectives,” he said. But some students don’t feel that openness at UNC. “Even if you just say the word — that you’re conservative or Republican — you’re not taken seriously,” [sophomore] Palmer said.
