Oh, I thought this was the thread for what schools we liked – not what our cousins liked.

Oh, I thought this was the thread for what schools we liked – not what our cousins liked.

Sheesh, Pizzagirl, it’s possible to have a soft spot for schools your cousins attended!
Are you just kidding?

I like the University of Wisconsin on those grounds (+ the lake).

NYU is vastly overrated in every field imo

I have a soft spot for UPenn because my dad and uncle both attended Wharton. I hope it is ok to like the school for this reason!

barrk123: burn! At least for the fields I’m in, though, I’ll argue that NYU is absolutely not overrated (film and Spanish).

It just goes to show how subjective an exercise this is. As someone above said, there are students at every university.

Sorry, I don’t get this.

Yes, she’s kidding. Cobrat is constantly telling us about the experiences of his innumerable cousins. It seems as if no matter what comes up, one of them has experienced it.

For Gilbert and Sullivan fans, I often recall singing this:

“And we are his sisters and his cousins whom he reckons by the dozens and his aunts!”

Thanks, Consolation. I think the DartMOUTH thing might refer to the correct pronunciation being closer to Dartmeth (can’t type a schwa on my keyboard). Presumably mini (do I have the right person?) was pronouncing it DartMOUTH when he was in high school. But maybe there’s something else behind the joke as well.

I SO agree about UCSC and Cal Poly SLO. I really wanted one of our kids to go there (S was accepted to both) but no go. Also LOVE UCB and UCLA. Loathe might be too strong a word, but I’m not crazy about UCSD. It seems to have no center, no soul, no real student community, just a bunch of buildings, some very ugly, all spread out in no logical order.

Funny, I felt the same way about Haverford; I just loved it. That sense of peacefulness was totally unappealing to my type-A daughter. She wouldn’t even apply.

I can’t say I loathe Boston College, but I was left with negative feelings after touring, mostly based on factors that have nothing to do with whether it’s a good school (like the bathrooms in the admissions office were filthy).

“Presumably mini (do I have the right person?) was pronouncing it DartMOUTH when he was in high school. But maybe there’s something else behind the joke as well.”

When I was 9, I wanted to go to dartMOUTH. (and I don’t even remember why?)

We took a tour with Haverford which I thought would be great for my S - he didn’t like it. I sent him on another tour with his grandfather - still didn’t like it. Go figure!

My D2 thought they were “too communal” at Haverford – like they were all part of one giant organism. She hated it… D1 likes being part of a group, and she loved Haverford (did not apply due to some restrictions on study abroad). I also thought the campus was lovely and peaceful, too.

Although we didn’t visit, I wanted S to apply to Haverford and he refused. For some reason, it just didn’t catch his fancy. I finally gave up. :)

I recall someone–maybe Carolyn?–whose S took an extreme dislike to Haverford because when they were there he saw kids playing cricket. :D

I really like USC and might apply there for grad school. (California)

I can’t think of any schools I hate off the top of my head. I don’t like Duke though.

The only thing I can really say is that I have a totally unreasonable dislike of Ohio State. 90% of it has to do with the way all the alums emphasize “the”, making it “THE Ohio State University”, like I thought that there were others and that it was critically important that I recognize the speaker as being from the greatest school that there is, was, or ever shall be. They have good academics (and horribly corrupt athletics) and I know some good people who went there… but I hate them a little every time they say the name.

You know you can’t get away with that without substantiation.

I have a soft spot for Wellesley, probably because they were my first acceptance :3

I hate, hate Notre Dame.

That is jaw-dropping. For a second, I thought you were described the hot-acceptances list for my state…

I wonder if it would be possible for a recruiter to just go ■■■■■ Stuy’s grounds for employable prodigies.

Ah, but there’s a catch. In my day, they would have wanted Jews. In Cobrat’s day, they would be seeking “Asians” (only, not really - Chinese mostly; few Mongolians, North Koreans, Uzbekis, Sri Lankans).

In either year, we could have made up the entire class at Cooper Union.

Well, you should recognize that fact ;)
