Which schools did you ultimately decide NOT to apply to and why?

I don’t actually think the schools do, fyi.

My kid was accepted several years ago by Choate, which was where we thought he was most likely to end up. The poor performance of the admissions office post acceptance was a big reason the school fell out of contention. The responsiveness was worst among his half-dozen or so acceptances.

Thanks for the advice! I’m trying not to let one bad experience impact my view of the school as a whole! Just counting the days till M10!

I’ll try my best to attend the revisit days, however, I’m applying to AZ, so my parents said I should choose my top 5 acceptances!!

None of the aforementioned adm. dept. service issues require a capital improvement project to remedy.

Nevertheless, Choate needed more space, and the new building will look great. I for one will miss the quaint admissions lounge with its gorgeous view overlooking the pond and fountain.

Because the admissions building was also a girl’s dorm, we never had reason to go inside, but I have a lot of lovely pictures from the outside.

Here’s one that no longer exists: The old headmaster’s house that was razed to make way for the Lanphier Center:

(I about cried at that one.)

Doesn’t look like a tear down to me…

It absolutely wasn’t. But they needed the land for the new building, and the new head wanted a more “functional?” house. Really sad to lose that piece of school history. You’d think they could have architected around it/incorporated it somehow.

They did the year our kids applied, FWIW. On campus, in person.

Must be a post-covid policy.

They actually addressed this in a podcast from 2021. They felt that on campus interviews gave a huge advantage, and were only really available to those who could afford to travel. So they made their process more efficient and leveled the playing field at the same time. It was intentional. And you are correct. The insight to make the change was born from the pandemic experience.

The fun part for us was that Dana Anselmi was also a guest on the podcast. She was at Berkshire at the time, but is now at St. Paul’s. My son and I really enjoyed meeting her and it was funny to hear her voice again.

It is a three part series, and I forget which episode the Choate rep discusses the interview policy change:
