Which social studies to choose for the senior year?

Economics is not necessarily a required general education course in colleges.

Given that colleges’ general education requirements and AP credit policies vary considerably, choosing AP courses to target colleges’ general education requirements means looking up those at all of the colleges the student may attend.

Gov and Econ were also 1 semester courses at my D’s school and both were required by the HS for graduation. Having had the three AP history classes got her out of an entire group of gen eds at her school.
If your child has already started a college list, it may be worth seeing what their AP policy looks like.

I will echo the general advice to go with what interests them. I’d also recommend asking other students who’ve already taken a course if they liked it, what they thought of the teacher, etc-- that’s what my D did when making similar choices.

Check your student’s graduation requirements - one of these courses could be required, not in AP format, of course, but still required.

I would advise taking class student feels most passionate about, but check CDSs of schools your kid will be applying- some also pose requirements for number of years this type of classes is taken or selection of courses they recommend or require applicants to complete. Good luck!

I don’t think there would be a preference between them! Go w/o what sounds most interesting…

As an econ major, AP econ is pretty boring. I suggest she watch some Jacob clifford videos to see if she finds the material interesting

100% US Government, AP or not. Every American needs to have some understanding of their constitutional rights, especially in this day and age. AP Gov is a dynamic and current course (my year was the last year Roe v Wade was tested, as a month after I took the AP test the Dobbs v Jackson decision made it obsolete) that is generally fun and engaging, with students “simulating” different branched of the government throughout the year.

Also, I’d be surprised if your high school doesn’t require it. Mine made everyone take either non-AP or AP government senior year. Also, some colleges require it – while my current university doesn’t explicitly require it for admission they do prefer it, and if you do manage to get in without it you need to remediate it through a very narrow selection of courses once enrolled.

I’m unaware of any university where this is the case

Not all high schools require it. But I would be very surprised if a student deciding between 5 AP courses doesn’t know what she needs to graduate.
