<p>UC system has proposed admitting more OOS students. Berkeley will admit more OOS students starting this year.</p>
<p>How about a couple of schools that are off everybody’s radar?

Don’t all the public universities love to brag that they have students from ___ number of states and ____ number of countries?</p>
<p>GA gives very little money to out of state students, unless they are tippy top. Otherwise, I think it is actually easier to get into UGA from out of state than in state.</p>

<p>I wonder if applications to UT declined in the years after Charles Whitman committed mass murder from the tower? I know it’s utterly irrational, but I’d hate for a child of mine to attend VA Tech… The thought of having “that” conversation with everyone who asked D where she was going, for four+ years.</p>
<p>At University of Vermont, 65% of the students are from out of state.</p>
<p>Whitman was one of my dad’s engineering students! Dad said he never would have guessed the guy would be capable of something like that. I don’t think applications dropped off much, from what I know. Most people don’t even remember it now, since it happened in 1965. The last time a stranger asked me about it was around 1980.</p>

<p>I just read the Wikipedia article about him. Poor guy - had an aggressive malignant brain tumor. He had been to lots of doctors, complaining of rage and horrible headaches. They gave him valium. It makes me so sad when folks realize there is a problem and seek medical/psychiatric attention and then still commit horrible acts (think Andrea Yates)…the system has failed them and their victims. </p>

<p>This is not universally true, but states with lower populations are generally happy to enroll OOS students.</p>
<p>While not a high number, the UC system is accepting more OOS applicants. I’m certain the reason is that they pay a higher tution. By the way, OOS includes international applicants.</p>
<p>LSU has good automatic merit scholarships for OOS students with reasonable GPAs and test scores. I would put them in the second category mentioned above, i.e., wants to attract better students to boost rankings.</p>
<p>Just wanted to say great thread. DS#2 will be applying next year–I like the idea of pushing him a little farther out of the nest but also like those cost reductions!</p>

<p>Some Publics want OOS students, but they won’t give any aid/merit…so unless you can pay full-freight, it can be a problem for many.</p>
<p>My son and I visited U of Missouri at Columbia over spring break a few weeks ago. We are from Texas and they seemed very welcoming to OOS and said they have a lot of Texas kids. We toured the journalism school and they said their enrollment was a majority OOS students. At the info session they passed out a flyer to OOS visitors telling how to establish residency for in-state tuition rates. My son said the school was too big for him but I thought the campus was very pretty and it had a really cute college town. Another good thing was they had an auto-admit formula based on class rank and SAT scores. Although S isn’t top 10% he did qualify for automatic admission there. </p>
<p>A good friend has a son going to UW at Milwaukee on a partial swimming scholarship. They said if stays there this summer and works he can qualify for in-state tuition. He loves it although it would be way too cold for us.</p>

<p>and another vote here for SUNY, especially Binghamton</p>
<p>UC Berkeley accepted my DS but offered no financial aid besides loans. I get the feeling they think of OOSers as a potentially great source of revenue.</p>

<p>I took a look at the UM-Twin Cities board and it seems like it’s a difficult school to get into.</p>
<p>^^^Does UM-Twin Cities set the bar higher for OOS? Many do such as UNC, UVA and I believe (still) the flagship Cali colleges UCB and UCLA.</p>
