Which Top 50 National University has the Highest Percentage of White Students?

@ucbalumnus – you make a good point. From what I understand, roughly half of WUSTL’s endowment is earmarked to the University hospitals and medical school. WUSTL has definitely stated that the cost of education is significantly more than tuition and expenses – so the endowment and gifts do figure prominently.

WUSTL has made a commitment to increase the economic diversity of the school – they have a long ways to go but are approaching 13% of student body that are Pell-eligible. As an aside, they just signed an agreement with KIPP in St. Louis to either provide a free or cover significant portions of the cost of education of any admitted alumni of KIPP schools from across the nation. Small steps…

That is interesting. According to Hillel, 27 percent of Yale’s undergraduate students are Jewish.

http://www.hillel.org/college-guide/list/record/yale-university

Assuming that the number of Black, Hispanic, Native American or Asian Jews approaches zero, that means that 12 percent of Yale’s undergraduates are non-Jewish whites.

Thanks for the list. Many of those are not national universities, so many of the top 50 are missing.

@MurphyBrown - That is helpful. According to the following survey, 94 percent American Jews self-identify as white.

http://www.pewforum.org/2013/10/01/chapter-2-intermarriage-and-other-demographics/

If we assume the same mix applies to the Jewish student body at Yale, and multiply the 27 percent who are Jewish by 94 percent who self-identify as white, that leaves us with Yale’s student body being 25 percent white Jews, or 14 percent non-Jewish whites.

@collegehelp- sorting on white+asian would be interesting, Berkeley might go from bottom to top…

Re #46:

The top 50 colleges and universities nationally were included precisely by @collegehelp (#44) as considered by the standardized scoring of entering students.

That’s true.

Thanks. Wonder where those numbers are sourced?

for example different numbers were shown for Tulane.

For the class of 2020 on their website:
Nearly one-fourth of the incoming class are students of color, multi-racial, bi-racial or international, and just over 41 percent of the class is male.

So if that’s 24% non-white / non-International, Tulane seems to be much whiter than those numbers…

Interesting that the eight of the 10 schools with the highest percentage of whites are public (Notre Dame and Tulane are outliers), while other than the UC’s, most of the least-white schools are private.

Stanford says different

The source for my data is the US Department of Education IPEDS database. It comes from the most recent year that is publically available.(2014-15).

I divided “White” by “Grand Total”.

Here are the categories used by the US Dept of Ed:

American Indian or Alaska Native
Asian
Black or African American
Hispanic
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
White
Two or more races
Race/ethnicity unknown
Nonresident alien

I would take that number with a gigantic grain of salt, especially given that the specified number of Jewish undergrads (1,500) exactly equals the specified number of Jewish grad students. I think that somebody guestimated a big round number and they went with it…

@foosondaughter - That was my initial thought, but if you look at the numbers reported by Hillel for the other Ivy League schools or for other highly ranked schools in general, they do not appear to be out of line. If the numbers are fudged, they are probably done so on the national level by Hillel.

And if I remember correctly Hillel rarely changes their numbers year over year.

^ I think Trinity University is the one in Texas, not Connecticut

We did college tours all this week. At multiple colleges the AOs made double-speak comments like, “we have X-percentage diverse students”.

Just say “non-white” already.

Yep. They are associated with the Concordia Language Villages, and are the credit granting institution for the 4-week college credit courses. A small school that doesn’t get many mentions other than locally.

@foosondaughter - Something about the numbers bothered me, so I did some more research. If you go to the Hillel site and add up their estimate of Jewish college students in the US (about 120+ schools), the total number is around 210,000 undergraduates, or 52,500 per annum.

The Pew report linked earlier lists the total population of Jews in America at 5,300,000. Of that total, 20% are in the 19 to 29 age cohort. Multiplying 5.3 million by 20 percent, and then dividing that number by 12 for the years in the age cohort produces a total of around 88,333 new 18 year olds each year.

The Pew survey also reports that 58 percent of Jews are college graduates, in comparison with 29 percent for the general population. Multiplying the 88,300 by 58 percent suggests about 51,233 new college graduates per year. This is a very similar figure to what Hillel reports for undergraduate enrollment.

If Hillel were significantly over-counting or under-counting, the overall numbers of college students would not be so similar.
