I think Santa Clara will be his first or second choice (or UCLA).

Personally, I think Santa Clara would be perfect for him…not too big…top ranked…strong school.

Glad to hear that they are need aware…I think they used to claim to be need-blind, but last year some parents felt that their child got an “edge” if they could pay. Some “need” kids at my nephew’s school with better stats were rejected in favor of some with lower stats who could pay.

The comment about Reed makes it sound like they suddenly had to change their admissions process for last year. That’s not true at all; they’ve been clear for at least the past 5 years that they are not need-blind. They were interviewed about admissions and talked about the number of decisions that were need-aware, but it’s not something new at all. If you’re a borderline admit, you are more likely to be admitted if you do not need aid. Many other schools are the same way, but they’re not as honest about it.

What about NYU? They have a ton of various ways to apply, and one can submit application without sending in an SAT or ACT at all. Has he taken any SAT IIs, or even AP’s? How were those scores? I’m pretty sure you can apply with ONLY APs (I’d need to go look it up again and I’m too lazy).

yes…he’s taken SAT IIs (req’d for UC application), and he’s taken AP classes - passed all of them with 4s and 5s. He’s also done some “dual enrollment” that his high school has with the local Cal State, so he has some college credits so far.
