Which UPitt Campuses are good?

Altoona could be a good compromise, keeping both Pitt to transfer to and PSU through 2+2 (though John Carroll would be nicer imho, and perhaps for a similar price.)

If you have a tuition waiver at Pitt, go to one of the three Pitt regional campuses. They make much more sense as they are all intended to be stand alone, residential campuses with mature, 4 year programs, so a student can transfer to main or decide to stay all four years if they decide they like it there. They all have NCAA sports (UPJ is DII and competes in the PSAC; UPB and UPG DIII), plenty of residential housing, and large campuses (all 3 have hundreds of more acres than the Pittsburgh campus). Some have majors unique only to the specific campus. Pitt-Greensburg has its own honors program. UPJ and UPG are also both ranked in the regional section of US News (UPJ is #12 in the North, UPB #20 in the North, and UPG is ranked in national liberal arts category (#16-18 public liberal arts)).

And no, there is no danger of any Pitt regionals being shuttered…that is just flat out false…the university is still investing in them and building new facilities and installing new programs…like relatively recent full 4-year nursing BSN program set up by Pitt’s School of Nursing at Greensburg and Johnstown and a full BSN engineering program set up by the School of Engineering at Johnstown. The only thing Pitt has done was to turn the 2-year only campus in Titusville into a regional training and education center, but Titusville only ever offered 2-year associates degrees and was, and is, tiny, and is now under Pitt-Bradford’s administration.

The threat of shuttering PSU branches may be true, they are trying to cut staff at them currently, but that is a completely different system and their branches and campuses have a completely different intent, and none are ranked.

Tuition waivers are hard to beat financially. What did your D end up deciding? Did your family ever visit John Carroll? If so, I’d love to hear about the experience.

Hello! My daughter accepted a TE scholarship at Carlow University which is in Oakland literally adjacent to Pitt. She is excited to be in that college part of town.

We did visit JCU during her junior year and also when they came to our town for an admitted students day. I grew up not far from that area and felt like the university was well-respected. The campus is on the smaller side with some nice green areas. It is in a wealthier suburb part of Cleveland so has plenty to do if you have a car and don’t mind driving. Really not much to walk to though - there was a small plaza with a pizza shop and a few other places but I understand that is being torn down for senior housing. The more I got to know the school the more impressed I was with it. They seem to truly value educating the whole person with a focus on service and social justice. Of all the schools my daughter applied to they were one of the best in terms of communication- even though there were a lot of emails they were clear and appropriate for the occasion. The college is most known for business and they seem to be trying to get into healthcare more as they recently started a BSN program. I would have liked to see her attend but the location just wasn’t for her and I needed to let her make the decision.

Thanks so much for the update! I’m so happy that your D receive a TE award to Carlow. That’s such a great option to have!

I also appreciate the feedback about JCU. It’s one that I see that seems to punch above its weight, but that I haven’t read much firsthand feedback from.

May I ask if they had to list or rank an alternative campus on their applications or did they just put the main campus? Thanks.

My kids just put main campus. They would not have attended Pitt if they had been assigned to a branch campus.

Thank you.
