white elephant gifts?

I think the big chocolate bar and an ornament sound good. How about white chocolate? Haha!

But really…a cake that looks like a white elephant…would be a riot. Just NOT with cauliflower stuff in the middle!

Building off the cake idea, an alternative would be white elephant cookies. Something like this:

A big, big no to a cake stuffed with cauliflower. I think that is more odd than funny.

Besides, I am averse to wasting food when so many face food insecurity.

Go buy a fruitcake at the grocery store. The heavier the better.<<<<<

Do you know how much fruitcake costs?

Call me a killjoy but I think this sounds like the worst party idea ever. I mean, I dredge unwanted stuff up from the closet depths every year too but I donate them to Goodwill.

Well real White Elephants are supposed to be things someone might like but others say ‘what?’ A Chia Pet, bright pink gloves, that glass ashtray your aunt brought you from South America. Useful things that aren’t useful to you. Not smelly sneakers or weird food.

I go to one of the swap things every year. Ornaments, Starbucks gift cards, a box of chocolates. It’s supposed to be fun, but if you don’t think it is fun, just don’t participate. We have people who do not bring an exchange item and that’s fine too, they just don’t pick anything during the swap.

I participate in a book swap every year. There are no rules on what kind of book it has to be, and some of the choices are really strange/funny/intentionally bad. But personally I’d really rather get a “real” book instead of The Farting Animals Coloring Book or whatever.

We used to have them at work and it was a lot of fun. There usually were a lot of kitschy decorative items, but I grabbed a nice bottle of flavored olive oil once. I think the funniest one was a huge doll of Elvis in a car.

I often bring food items and they tend to be very popular.

Update: i made a strawberry cake with Pilsbury dark chocolate frosting.

@paul2752 Good choice!

So…was this a Yankee gift swap where folks could either trade or keep when their turn come up?

IMO, the success of the white elephant is how many times your gift changed hands…or if the person who chose it liked it.

What other sorts of gifts did you see??

Really random things:
-tiny chocolate collections(i got this one)
-a giant KEG
-fidget spinner
-yugioh card
-transformer robot, but called “converter” in off-brand

  • a STEAM game code

@paul2752–did the person who got your cake seem pleased? Are you happy with your chocolates?

Eh. the chocolate was really cheap ones. The friend who got my cake thought it was funny that I used pieces of frozen pineapple to put “WITE L-EFANT”.
