White House Internship

Is it just me, or are there way fewer people following this thread than previous application cycles?

Haha, either that or more lurkers than posters lol

A further update - I received a vitals email two weeks ago (post dept. interview), then received the Departmental Review SF86 (+ FBI consent, etc.) last week. I’m anxious to hear back either way. Neither my recommenders nor 1st round of SF86 verifiers (recent jobs, grad school, etc.) have received calls. Good luck patiently waiting!

WH2012, I’m on the same exact timeline as you.

I just freaked out. I receive automatic notifications for a number of offices of interest, and I just received alerts in my email account entitled: “4 LA students chosen as White House interns” and “9 Virginians among more than 140 White House spring interns”. The names were announced for the Spring session (the current WHIProgram), but I had thought they were for the summer. =) phew… we still stand a chance.

WH,

Wow, so they are announcing the names for them now? Does that mean they will announce us (we are all amazing and I expect nothing but good things) in June/July?

Denver

Of all you guys that got sf86 forms, how many of you are grad students? Any undergrads?

Also, is there anyone here who hasn’t received the sf86 yet?

Denver you’re probably right…tells you how long the background checks may actually take to complete.

Hoping, I’m a grad student. Which are you?

Hoping,

I’m a grad student as well.

Hello, even though I’m not posting on a regular basis, I’m keeping up with this thread daily. Just as anxious to hear back as the rest of you!

Hoping, I sent in my SF86 2 weeks ago; undergrad.

I’m an undergrad as well, none of my references have been contacted.

Austin, how did you see who’s looking at your social media?

Hello everyone. I have decided to transition from a lurker to a poster. ummm… where do I start???

First, all of you that applied for the summer 2012 WHI seem like you have unparalleled, outstanding academic profiles followed by well documented work histories. I as well applied for the summer 2012 WHI and I am dreadfully; however, patiently awaiting to receive some type of response. Thus far, I have only received two APE e-mails. I would not be truthful with myself, if I do not concede to being pessimistic because I have yet to receive vitals or an interview with any of the departments I’ve selected.

I have interned with a specific government department every summer for the entire duration of my undergraduate career. (two years in DC, one year respective to the State where I reside)
I have a pretty good GPA; I guess. I have studied abroad and I am very proficient in another language besides English and I’m currently in the process of mastering an Asian language. I also have an unwavering commitment to public service. However, I don’t think I have any overwhelming characteristics that will demarcate me from others. I’m pretty sure a high percentage of the persons who have applied to the WH share most, if not all, of my characteristics aforementioned.

I can say that I have been rummaging through this forum and I’ve done quite a bit of research on previous interns that have been accepted. I can count on one hand and some on my other hand of the number of students(selected serve in the WH) that are from Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Now this is only the research that I have garnered and I am aware it has limitations. Hence, I do not know the percentage or number of students that apply to the WH program that are from HBCUs. Or a person doesn‘t know if students fit the role that the departments are searching for. (And the previous sentences do not elude or imply to anything else than clearly what it states) Sometimes I feel like the students from the ivy’s or the top tier schools may have an upper leg (but as seen in previous posts…there have been students from very prestigious universities that were not selected… so that statement is disingenuous)

Sometimes you just wonder what exactly it is that people are looking for. I refresh this thread about 5 times a day and I check my e-mail constantly seeking for some type of feedback. To be candid, I wasn’t going to apply to the WHI because I felt it was way out of my league. This internship is highly prestigious and I know it attracts a vast amount of highly intelligent, diligent and ambitious students.(like all of you) Sometimes you just wonder if you are good enough. But anyways sorry for the unsolicited vent.

Good Luck to everyone and remember if you don’t make it now, just know it wasn’t the right time or season for you. Continue to apply and never lose faith. Remain patient and faithful. Hahaha, I guess I should avail myself of my own advice. But sometimes this waiting feels insurmountable! With all that being said, hopefully I did not divulge too much and hopefully in the next two days, I will receive vitals or a phone interview.

I do have a question though, do you all think if a person has been to the WH (prior to the submission of an WHI application) and submitted paperwork similar to the what persons have described the vitals to be, that the WH department may circumvent this process and proceed with an interview? I believe this question was asked and answered in previous threads, but I would like to know you guys’ and gals’ opinion.

Thanks

Sorry for the grammatical mistakes. I am typing fast and I’m sleepy.

welcome JCPAT. yes, it seems that if you already went through clearance for a WH visit in the recent past, you may be able to bypass the vitals part of the app.

i’m an UG too btw.

Wow, how wonderful to find a group of people who are in the same boat as me! Wish I would have found this thread earlier. I am on the same timeline as WH 2012 and BioSci and I am an undergrad. These next two weeks are going to be quite a test of patience.

Jcapa

check out the list released this week of spring wh interns. It has it’s share of ivy or AAU students, but there also plenty of others from less prestigious places. School names do matter, but they aren’t all that matter.

Good luck!

I just realized I wrote a novel.(my first post) I apologize!

Hoping, thanks for the welcome.

Austin, Yes, you are right there are students that hail from various universities. I guess I was concerned about the representation from HBCUs. Nevertheless, there are students that come from HBCUs that serve in the WH. I hope you guys receive some notification soon. I know the wait seems unbearable.

Thanks for the link btw!

They pushed back the application deadline for Fall 2012 by almost a month! Ahh, more waiting!

Anyone been contacted this week? I just missed a call from an “unknown” number and am worried it was from the WH!
