Who can tell me pros & cons of Atlanta?

Ack I cant type! Apologies for the typos above.

And whats that old joke about making fun of southerners, but people don’t move up north to retire ??

Thanks for all your posts everyone! :)

Good information, both pro and con, just what we are looking for.

So, now we know if she is serious about Atlanta, it would be in the East Cobb, Sandy Springs, Marietta, Roswell, etc. areas.

So now I ask again…just out of curiousity for her AND me…what other towns would fit the criteria of what she is looking for outside of Atlanta? And outside of Georgia?

Rodney: How did you pick those 3 towns you mentioned?

Jym: Oldie but Goodie joke! Soph’s mom was just concerned re: the Anti-semitism in Atlanta, which is actually pretty important to my girlfriend. I know she would want to feel comfortable in her neighborhood. She is conservative and would become active at whatever synagogue they join.

Alwaysamom: good info. too, thank you.

Silly question but I’ll ask it anyway…any parts of Florida that have finished basements? I sort of doubt that. I also need to find out why that’s so important to her.

Barnardmom: Below 40 is pretty cold! Why are YOU thinking of moving there?

Again, thank you all for your posts, they are all important in helping friend make a decision and frankly I am getting an education from this too! :)

jym: my parents lived on Hilton Head for a number of years after retirement. My mother told me she used to see a bumper sticker that said, “When I get old I’m going to move up north and drive slow.” :)

BTW, a fair number of people DO retire here in Maine. Some of them split their time between a place on a lake or the ocean here and a condo or rental in Florida or the like for a few months in the winter.

News Report:

I just saw on the internet that Alpharetta, GA was one of America’s most friendly towns! :)

There are lots of beautiful places to retire, and selecting ones with low or no tax ( state tax) is smart. That said, I don’t miss driving in or shoveling snow.

Didn’t know that Henny Youngman and Joey Adams are related to Jym626. Whoa!!! Big finale coming!

My favorite bumper sticker seen years ago in Atlanta; “If You Love New York, Then Take I-85 North, Thank You.”

LOL, Lake Washington. There was some joke about NY/NJ traffic, making the tolls one way and it being NJs problem (which the tolls already are, so I dont get it) but I forget the joke. Oh well, nevermind…

Thats interesting about Alpharetta being on the list of most friendly towns. Northern A quite enjoyable. For those into the serious green/sustainable living environment, a cool place is on the south side of Atlanta is Serenbe [Serenbe Community](http://www.serenbecommunity.com/home.html)

Jym:

Do you live in Atlanta? Only give me the answer if you want to, no pressure ;)

pros: affordable housing
cons: hot and humid

I speak from experience** just noticed part of my previous post got cut off-- meant to say Northern Atlanta, not Northern A.

Jues hear Atlanta (Roswell) is getting the innovations division of GM and 1000 new jobs
