@abasket - I am not really looking so much for advice on what to pack here. I’m more curious to know who else has forgotten how to pack one bag to check and one to carry on. It used to be a travel skill that I had back when everyone checked two bags and carried one. Sort of like the way I have to re-learn how to dress for winter every single year.
In my experience with Condor, they did weigh the carry on bag in the US, but they didn’t when we left Frankfurt. The lady shook her head like I was crazy, lol.
It always helps to have one of those dangle weighers and put that in your carry on!
@greenwitch - LOL Condor weighed Happykid’s backpack “carry-on” last week that was mostly clothing, but didn’t weigh her “personal item” which had all of the electronics and could well have been heavier.
Yup. I do have one of those luggage scales. It will go in my “personal item”.
That’s why people wear those crazy jackets with pockets big enough to hold a laptop, lol.
Lol. Ever seen a Michelin Man walking onto a plane with a tiny purse?
Have fun traveling, @happymomof1.
@doschicos I took it OP meant the European sized carryon. They are somewhat smaller, looks roughly the same. That’s what I have for a carryon. Not as big as American carry ons but still plenty roomy. You would have space left after the bare basics.
Make up, medicine, jammies, undies, a pair of shoes, a change of clothes, a phone charger and my passport/ID and money. Oh and if you wear contacts - the case and small solution. I got some tuck once having to check all bags and it got delayed an extra day. I was on a small island without access to take out my contacts.
Since I don’t use them all the time, I found myself on a plane without headphones once or twice.
I also bring a book and magazines in case of a long delay without being able to charge the ereader.
I always bring a portable phone charger in my carry on. If you are delayed and running short on battery, there is nothing worse than trying to find an outlet in an airport. I am charging mine right now for my morning flight.
If I’m checking a bag I don’t bring a large carry on. I prefer to travel the airport light. I would bring a backpack or a large tote. I make sure to have a phone charger, hairbrush, medication, toothpaste and toothbrush. Also a pashmina to use as a blanket, sweater or sweatshirt. Change of underwear and a fresh shirt in case my bag is lost or delayed. I also take some sort of snack like nuts and bars in case I am stuck without food for a long period of time.
Sounds like the OP wasn’t really asking what she should put in her carry on but, since that seems to be what the thread has become, I’ll add what I haven’t seen listed: an empty water bottle to be filled after going through security, gum and snacks.
I travel a fair amount and now leave my ‘travel’ headphones along with a small packing cube with my travel charging cords in my carry on permanently.
All of the above, plus extra underwear in case of a missed flight requiring you to spend the night somewhere. And don’t forget the 3 oz. rule for gels and liquids.
I definitely haven’t forgotten what to bring in my carry on tote, since I pretty much always check my luggage.
I do pack less in my tote when flying overseas since we fly business class. No need for water bottle, snacks, extra socks, toothbrush, etc. My tote for our last trip had my IPad/phone, power cords, euro adapter, my crossbody, meds, small makeup case and travel docs/credit cards/DL in passport case. H threw in his book. I wore my everyday jewelry and didn’t bring any extra.
I never bring a change of clothes because there are always stores if need be.
Some of the airlines (Qatar, Emirates etc) are very picky about carry-on bag weight. It is limited to 7 Kgs which IMO is ridiculous. I usually have my carry-on and a backpack with my laptop for local flights - but that would be way too heavy for these international flights. Interestingly enough, they don’t weigh your purse. So, I switched to a tote bag where I carried my mac/ipad etc (it was crazy heavy) - but they don’t care
Honestly, they should just put us on a scale, with all our bags, and take it from there. It would be comical except that some people end up being charged for all this.
Incentive to use a lightweight backpack instead of a wheeled bag that takes up half of that limit when empty.
Perhaps the airlines do not want to have passengers bringing heavy carry-on bags and asking the flight attendants to lift them, a potential injury risk for the flight attendants.
