Who here has not gotten COVID? Who has long COVID?

I went to a small party 10 days ago and got that ominous text a couple of days later. Started isolating from immunocompromised H right away. No symptoms for a few days, then a sore throat, runny nose, you know the drill.

I’ve blown through several covid tests over the last week and checked every symptom tracker … it’s probably just a bad cold. I haven’t had a cold since before the pandemic, so I guess I’d forgotten how nasty it could be. Thought I’d finally joined the Covid Club, but apparently not (yet).

Part of me is wishing that whatever I have would be covid, so I could try Paxlovid. And the sensible part of me is spitting poo-poo-poo to ward off the evil eye from that thought. :innocent:

But living in the spare bedroom and masking every time I emerge is getting old. I feel like I should have a little bell to ring like they used to give to lepers.

Have you tested for RSV? I had symptoms like yours. Sore throat, runny nose, followed by cough. No fever, not much of a headache. My PCP office offers a free swap for RSV, Covid and flu in one swap.

The test came back, negative for Covid, negative for flu and positive for RSV. I did not take any medication. Drink a lot of warm water and rest/sleep more. The worst part, frequent cough, runny nose, phlegm, lasted 3 days. Then, things have gotten better.

Does she have traditional Medicare?

@toledo why does she have to pay OOP for paxlovid? There is no charge for this medication through 2024 for all Medicare recipients (my Medicare Advantage is included but it’s possible some do not).

Does she not have RX coverage?

I am sure she also has a Medicare supplement, but because she did not meet 4 requirements, she was told she would have to pay for Paxlovid. My brother, overheard the whole conversation. I suspect the person she talked to may have been ignorant because tone of her 3 risk factors was breast cancer, a diagnosis from 4 years ago, so not current.

@toledo

I hope hope your mom isn’t feeling too awful. If her symptoms get worse in the next 12 hours, I’d call the PCP again in the morning.

this is what I found for medicare

Hmmm I got my new paxlovid to bring along for travel shortly after using the Rx I had when we had covid in mid-July. I wasn’t charged anything. I have medicare A&B & private insurance.

My husband wasn’t charged anything for it. He has a Medicare Advantage plan.

You don’t need more than one risk factor - both my doctor and a tele-health doctor prescribed it to me solely on the basis of being over 65. Free with Medicare. (Edited to change Medicaid to Medicare.)

I think you mean Medicare, not Medicaid.

After being stuck at home due to ice storms for almost a week, my daughter’s family all tested positive for Covid last night. Best we can figure, the 5 year old must have been exposed last Thursday at preschool. Then about 4 days later she had a low fever and sniffles, and 3 days after that the rest of the family is ill. So after missing a week of school to ice, they will now miss another week to Covid. I wish I could go help, or at least drop things off, but the ice has us trapped in our house for now. Not a great start to 2024.

This family has been so cautious until this fall so it was only a matter of time. And they said it was super weird to see the test line show up after getting negative tests for 3 years!

How is the 5 year old?

Can you send them a “treat” - dinner or Crumbl cookies or something fun or needed via a delivery service? I don’t know how far they are from you or if delivery service is being done with the weather in their area but it would be a fun way to help them out or just brighten their day!

The 5-year-old still just has a stuffy nose. Fever is gone. Mom has a very sore throat. Dad has lots of congestion and is just getting over pneumonia from some other infection. He’s going to have a tele-visit with a doctor this afternoon to see if that might be a cause for a Paxlovid prescription. The 7-year-old appears okay so far.

I haven’t seen any delivery trucks in our neighborhood this week and we have a neighbor who gets lots of deliveries. Things should thaw by Sunday and then I can drop off dinner and treats and new Lego kits! They are only a 20-minute drive away but we had .5 inch of ice on top of slightly melted ice and snow yesterday. The main roads are not in bad shape, it’s just getting out of our neighborhood and into theirs. Lots of hills and no plowing/salt/deicer on the side streets.

yes, paxlovid is free to Medicare beneficiaries thru the end of this year. But, those with a Medicare Advantage plan are subject to approval/recommendation from their primary care doc.

My husband had no problem getting it on his plan. He just called the doctor’s office and told them he’d tested positive. The nurse called in the prescription.
