Who here has not gotten COVID? Who has long COVID?

The FDA recently recommended that vaccines target a JN.1 lineage variant, preferably KP.2 which was common at the time. It will be closer to current variants than the previous XBB.1.5 targeted vaccine.

Well of course Florida is one of states with high levels, as i seem to be exposed constantly. The first time I dodged it late June. Tuesday I had lunch outside with a friend who tested positive today. Time will tell if I dodged it again. Last vaccine was last fall.

I live in Oregon, and lots of people I know have tested positive in the last two months :frowning:

My kiddo is flying home from eastern Washington tomorrow; 2 one hour flights, and a 3.5 hour layover in Seattle. I asked him to go get a KN95 or N95 for all that close quarters traveling; I don’t want him catching it and bringing it home to me!

It’s a risk reduction move, as we aren’t wearing masks in our day to day lives, but if I were in a crowded indoor environment for many hours…I’d think about masking up again in different situations.

My grandchild’s daycare was closed today and tomorrow because all the teachers have Covid. And several of the kids, of course. In Oregon, which is currently a hot spot.

I recently came back from visiting Oregon and did not seem to have caught anything. But almost all of my activity was outdoors.

Our synagogue has an outbreak. In-person shiva minyan Sunday night. So far, 20% of the people who attended are sick. Seeing more people in masks everywhere these days.

I got the vaccine last week. It’s the old version, but I’m flying in two weeks and decided something was better than nothing. I got Covid last year in the interim between when my shot had worn off and the new one became available. Travel was involved then. Not taking that risk again.

Do you know if it was mild for those infected? When I had it in April I wouldn’t have known it was Covid if I didn’t get tested. It felt like a regular cold. I think my daughter’s family and my mother also had it, but they didn’t want to test. They also got over it very quickly. I am wondering with the vaccines and through multiple infections, the virus is not as potent any more.
A good friend traveled back from France to go to D2’s wedding. She couldn’t come because tested positive right before the wedding. I think we are having a bit of a surge now.

I keep hearing that we have a surge here. When I woke up with a headache this week, which is unusual for me, I tested. I was negative, and the headache was gone by the end of the day. I’m glad that it wasn’t Covid, but I want to be vigilant so that I don’t unknowingly ruin someone’s vacation (or worse).

D1 and I are going to visit my parents on Sunday since my Dad has not been doing well. We are both going to test before we go as we would hate to give Covid to either my Dad or Mom. We will also bring masks with us since we will have to be inside since the weather at their house is suppose to be 100 degrees that day.

I had it for the first time two weeks ago. I’m fully vaccinated, but my last vaccination was 9 mos ago. I felt like crap! I had a fever for 3 days and a horrible crushing headache. I tested positive for 14 days.

I caught it from my adult son who is home for the summer. He’s had it before. He had 3 or 4 vaccinations but didn’t get last fall’s vaccination. He felt pretty lousy but didn’t think that it could be COVID. It wasn’t until after I tested positive that I made him test.

I also last had the last vaccination 9 months ago. I recently traveled by plane but wore a N95 mask on the plane. No problem yet.

Is the current vaccination covering the current covid variant ? I find this confusing, I am waiting for the fall vaccination.

The current vaccine is not covering the FLiRT variants well. They are responsible for about 70% of the cases out there. It is expected to reduce the chance of death or hospitalization in those who are vulnerable some, like all the prior vaccines who also lagged behind the mutations of the variants.

The most recent COVID-19 vaccines from September 2023 (which are no longer in production and may be out of stock at some pharmacies and providers) targeted the XBB.1.5 variant. The current variants are JN.1 descendants like KP.2, KP.3, KP.3.1.1, etc.; the XBB.1.5 vaccine is less effective against them than XBB.1.5. The FDA recommended that this year’s vaccines target JN.1 or preferably KP.2.

When you said that -The FDA recommended that this year’s vaccines target JN.1 or preferably KP’s,etc. Are you talking about the one that will come out this fall 2024?

H recently got Covid from after a trip to Europe. This is his 3rd time, and he did get an additional booster (he’s over 65) before the trip. He can’t take Paxlovid, but did get a Rx for Molnupiravir. Wild prices, BTW. From $250ish at his usual pharmacies to free elsewhere (thanks GoodRx).

He wasn’t very sick, and I never did get it.

We got a covid (pfizer) booster in early May, so will be able to get the new one in the fall. I just got the prevnar pneumonia vaccine so I didnt have to get too many at once in the fall (I’ll get the flu shot, the covid and I and scheduled for my final Hep A shot). Trying not to get covid before my Hs likely surgery next week and before our Africa trip, if we are able to go after his surgery.

Mostly, it seems that severity is less for those who had both vaccine and prior infection compared to those with vaccine only. Of course, it tends to be worst for those with neither before.

But there is still substantial individual variation. Some people find a new infection very unpleasant even after prior infection and vaccine. And some people had minimal or no symptoms when they got it before vaccine was available. Besides age, other conditions, and initial viral load, there are also genetic variants associated with higher or lower risk of severe disease.

We have had every possible booster for Covid, including a repeat of the most recent one in April (after having a booster in October 2023). We spaced out of Prevnar 20, RSV and DPT, having no more than one shot a week so we would minimize side effects and it seemed to have worked for us. We did get Covid in July 2023, after H’s buddy’s 80th birthday party which was VERY crowded, about a year ago. We continue to wear well-fitting KF94 masks indoors with others except while eating/drinking and use the Enovid nasal spray and have not had covid again or prior.

I’m curious.

Of those that are getting in now - or know someone who has recently gotten it…when was the last time (if ever) that you had a COVID infection? Not a vaccination but an actual infection.

DH and I caught what with almost certainty was JN.1 while traveling in the UK this past December. We both have remaining antibodies. Yes, we tested for these. My first infection was August 22. Those antibodies ( Nucleocapsid) stayed with me for 10 months. They were gone before the December 23 trip. Up until that UK trip, DH had never had COVID (yes, had tested his Nucleocapsid on a regular basis).

After the UK infection, both of us had a jump in spike protein antibodies (results of mRNA shots and/or native infection). Both of us above the upper measured limit.

I’m wondering if the JN.1 version antibodies are offering any protection against this latest strain. And if those that are getting it now did or did not have JN.1
