Who here has not gotten COVID? Who has long COVID?

When will it be available?

I guess the easiest thing is to contact my pharmacy and ask…

mNEXSPIKE is not yet available. Typically when a company says something like for the ‘2025-26 respiratory season’, they mean Fall. But possible could come earlier in September. Spikevax is available now and will continue to remain on the market, even after mNEXSPIKE is available.

So are you all thinking these new vaccines are more desirable and/or effective than just getting another Pfizer vaccine?

There will be only one new vaccine on the market this Fall, mNEXSPIKE, at least as of right now.

mNEXSPIKE was compared to SPIKEVAX in clinical trials, not Pfizer’s Comirnaty. But, mNEXSPIKE did demonstrate higher rVE as compared to SPIKEVAX in some patients:

mRNA-1283 (mNEXSPIKE) showed a 9.3% higher relative vaccine efficacy (rVE) compared to mRNA-1273 (SPIKEVAX) in individuals aged 12 years and older, and in a descriptive sub-group analysis, a 13.5% higher rVE in adults aged 65 and older.

In the Phase 3 trial, mRNA-1283 was found to have a similar safety profile to mRNA-1273, with fewer local reactions and comparable systemic reactions.

It’s important to note that mNEXSPIKE has a more narrow approval than SPIKEVAX and Comirnaty, so if one isn’t 65+, or doesn’t have at least one risk factor if between 12-64, one may not be able to get mNEXSPIKE this upcoming respiratory virus season.

As always, talk with your physician about which vaccine makes sense for you, and the timing of your next vaccine. Some people may need a booster now, rather than waiting until Fall. Some might be advised to get a second booster in later Fall/winter, if they get boosted now.

I called a CVS pharmacy. They said the new vaccine will be available in August. They advised me to wait for few months before I get another vaccination.

That’s interesting. Our vacations are planned for August (in US) and then October (Europe). I guess I’ll call my doc and see what she advises.

My last vaccination was Sep 2024, so he said I would be getting the same vaccine. I am traveling in 3 weeks and that’s why I thought I should get a booster, but he said to wait.

Thanks for this timely info about covid vaccines. I have shared it with family & friends. I know many vulnerable folks >65, asthmatic and other health issues. They also thank you! I will ask my docs when we should get next vaccines. We got vaccines at end of April.

Note that the current main variant LP.8.1 is more similar to the 2024 vaccine targets KP.2 and JN.1 than the 2024 main variants JN.1 and KP.2 were to the 2023 vaccine variant XBB.1.5. So it is possible that (a) your 2024 vaccine may provide more protection now than your 2023 vaccine did in 2024, and (b) another dose of the 2024 vaccine may enhance protection now more than another dose of the 2023 vaccine did in 2024.

The new vaccine coming out in August will be more similar to the 2023 vaccine?

If a new vaccine becomes available, it will likely target a current variant, which will be more similar to the 2024 variants (JN.1 and KP.2) than the 2023 variant (XBB.1.5). The current variants are descendants of JN.1.

The question for me, and I have received a booster every year, do I still have some immunity from the booster I got last fall? Should I get a booster this year if it’s the same as last?

I don’t see any way there will be any new iteration of a Covid vaccine for fall 2025.

This is something that makes me very nervous, angry, unsettled

Some newer vaccine will be at CVS in August. I got one in late April and will wait for new vax.

I was contacted by the pharmacy to get a booster I think in April. I’d had the last one in the fall. I looked up what the recommendations were an they are 1 per year for under 65 and every 6 months for over 65.

I’m glad I have this one to get me thru the summer and then will, hopefully, get the new one in the early fall.

Does it hurt to have one now and then in 4-5 months instead of the 6 months recommended? I didn’t see anything that suggest it would be harmful or ineffective.

I’ve gotten the boosters every time they told me to, and I haven’t had covid yet. I travel by air 3-4 times a year, do things locally as I like (restaurants, theater, sporting events). I do go to the gym 4-5 times a week but I bring my own equipment. I do play bridge and mahjongg several times a week and make sure to wash my hands after touching the cards and tiles.

Until today, I have never had Covid and haven’t even had a cold for about 9 or 10 years. Have not been cloistered. When a covering Doc called me back about Paxlovid, she was stunned that I hadn’t had Covid, almost speechless. We’ve used a lot of Enovid; though we traveled on 4 planes over the weekend (wore masks in airport and plane) and socialized with lots of people. Also, if your Uber driver is erupting in constant open mouthed sneezes, a mask may not save you. Luck ran out, but so far, it is still manageable.

DH and I decided to go ahead and get our Covid boosters tomorrow. We haven’t had one since last November. This way we can hopefully get the new shot at the end of the year prior to our international travel. And our insurance will be changing by then as well.

I can’t get a clear sense of whether we can get the booster again in about five months but I will ask tomorrow when we get our boosters. My plan/hope would be that we can get the new Moderna vaccine at the end of the year prior to our international travel, but it will be only five months or so from tomorrow. Do you remember where you read the guideline about every six months? I thought I read somewhere else that we could get it after four months I think but that may be old information and who knows what is being put out these days.

We are also traveling at the end of the year. We are waiting to get our next COVID shots in October when I think the newer vaccine will be available.

This is from the Cleveland clinic, but I don’t know how old it is:

H just got a booster this week, and he got Moderna rather than Pfizer for the first time. It kicked his butt that afternoon. I’m going to do Moderna soon, too.
