Azores are a pretty short flight from NY. We looked into doing an extended weekend there and it was doable.
Cancun ?
St. Pete Beach is a fast flight from NY. Many airlines to choose from, including discount airlines. Would suggest the first or second week in April. Can stay in multiple condos, hotel, motel, air b&b. Would be doable with your budget.
Oh, I really loved St Pete’s when I was there about 10 years ago.
Okay, that definitely limits it, 3-4 nights and 2K max. If the 2K includes flights and hotels without using miles or points, that definitely narrows it down.
Such a short trip, I suggest only direct flights, plenty of those out of JFK or LGA. My suggestion is Asheville, NC. We went there in April, and it was lovely. There are direct flights from LGA that are very cheap. Reasonable hotels. It is a surprisingly picturesque place. Nice medium sized town with a wonderful tapas restaurant. Very artsy area, really worth going to just to see the artists shops. And of course the Biltmore Estate is well worth seeing. Nice weather. I think you could definitely do this on a budget.
Thank you for all of the suggestions. Many really good ones, including several places we have already had the privilege of visiting before.
Thank you to the posters who put Asheville on my radar. That sounds right up our alley (art, food, beer, hiking and a boho vibe).
I was thinking more like arrive, stay 4 nights and depart on the 5th day - I agree…time in place has to far exceed time it takes to get there and home.
@Boilermom1 I love both of these places! Visited Quebec City in 2017 and Charleston in 2022 (loved it so much we went twice!).

Our kids also rave about Richmond.
I’d have a hard time spending 4 nights in Asheville - but everyone’s interests are different. It’s very nice - and Biltmore is impressive -but that’s a long time.
You could also jaunt easily to Great Smokey Mountain National Park from there - or Greenville SC might be a nice place to spend a day or two (max) - it’s a quick drive.
Culebra/Culebrita
- Fly to San Juan
- Taxi/uber to Ceiba and take the ferry to Culebra (taxi/uber around $80, then $2 per ferry ticket).
- Affordable lodging at Mamacitas or Palmetto Guesthouse
- Rent a golf cart at Carlos Jeep Rental for ~$60/day
- Do a day trip to Culebrita (ask for German)
- Affordable meals at Zaco’s Tacos, Heather’s (pizza/pasta), Dinghy Dock, Mamacitas among others
- Enjoy the beaches and hiking!
Richmond/Colonial Williamsburg/Jamestown, if you rent a car. Not too much boho vibe though…
Really depends on your interests. We have done four night trips to the West Coast which are not ideal, but workable. We went to LA (from NYC area) in early June for an event and spent time at the beach, touring museums and other sites, and doing a little hiking walking. The first day we took an early morning flight so had most of the day then and the last day is full of travel.
Had a great trip (a bit longer) with a flight to/from Phoenix and then went to the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff and Sedona. Was early May and we even got a bit of snow in Flagstaff. Was less pricey as we camped part of the time and stayed one night in a camping cabin. Great mix of sites, hikes, and then relaxation.
Washington DC, Shenodoah National Park, and then the Charlottesville VA area have a lot to do with sites, museums and outdoor activities. If you can drive, the cost should meet your budget.
Interstate 66 to Front Royal, VA (gateway to Shenandoah National Park/Skyline Drive) runs almost directly from Dulles Airport, also close to Ronald Reagan Airport. It’s an easy, quick and beautiful drive. There are lots of cabins and cottages to rent in the area around the park, and places for wine-tasting (local vineyards in the area) if you like that. There are caves in the Front Royal area as well, near Skyline Drive.
