Who plans to attend UMD?

@jamasonmd - just want to clarify that you understand that scholars is not like a minor or double major…so while computer science and accounting are a good combination, participation in the Business, Society and the Economy Scholars program is not going to give a combined/dual degree. Scholars is a program that augments your educational experience, expands horizons beyond your chosen major and earns a citation for BSE scholars only. The BSE program is “hosted” by Smith, but participation in the Scholars BSE program does not confer acceptance into the Smith School of Business. Certainly, your son can apply for a dual major and be accepted into Smith, but just want to make sure you understand what the scholars program is and is not.

From the website: “In weekly colloquia and a supporting curriculum, students develop a broad understanding of what a business is, how to run a business, and the integral role of business in society. Prominent faculty, business leaders and other experts meet with students, leading to the final semester, in which Scholars complete a business-related project, internship, or community service program. With this capstone project, students apply all they have learned in BSE to challenging and critical real world business situations.”

Scholars is an awesome program and I’m sure your son will enjoy it. Congratulations on being a Terp mom!!!

no kidding and here I thought it was a major, go figure!!

sophiscated not sufficated, oops!!

Good chance I’ll be going here! I know I’m definitely going to major in ECE, but I may double major with physics as well.
I also got into the ACES honors program, which is a HUGE bonus for me. That program looks like a really cool thing of which I think I could take great advantage.
Now I just wait for money…

I got in as a spring admit. I’d love to go there although I have not yet committed. The only issue is finance, but my dad did recently tell me that I can go where I would like :)

I found it interesting reading others looked at JHU and simply said “it’s too expensive,” especially given the great state flagship that is UMD. I told my son I wouldn’t pay for JHU, and I wouldn’t let him take out 80K in loans either. He wound up at a smaller school, but my younger son is hoping to be accepted to UMD class of 2018.Go terps!!!

S has committed to U of MD and did get his first choice of scholars program BSE. Who else is definitely going to U of MD and got into the scholars BSE program?

jamasonmd - What is your son’s intended major?

computer science

My S is going to University of Maryland. BioEnginnering. None of his friends are. Looking for a roommate right now. A student who is focus on studying more than partying.

We are visiting UMD next week for the first time. If my D falls in love with it, we intend to petition for fall semester acceptance since currently she has been accepted for spring with the option for freshman connection. Has anyone heard of any successful petitioning in this situation?

Lettygtown, My S is currently a Jr. in engineering. He also did not know anyone as a freshman. However, during the overnight orientation they told the kids that if they met someone during orientation, they could request to room together. This worked out well for him as he met a nice, studious, sports nut (like himself) from Colorado and they successfully roomed together freshman year. Hope your S is as happy at UMD as mine has been!

@8pawsnfeet I don’t know about petioning for the fall, but my D has some friends that did the freshman connection in the fall and they liked it. They live off campus but nearby in very nice apartments. There’s also a freshman connection option of doing the fall semester in London, [Programs>Brochure>Education Abroad](Brochure>Education”>http://myea.umd.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10094).

Ely thank you so much for your advice. We were not considering overnight orientation but now I see a benefit from it. We would probably try that.
