The UCs are very concerned that international students have mastered English. It’s a big issue and Berkeley, for one, does a lot of international applicant video interviews, just to verify. It’s not the same as being a generally crummy writer. If you did not have your essays proofed, they may have had a concern about keeping up with essays/proficiency.
