Why are women more religious than men?

<p>Perhaps it is because women live with a constant awareness of the randomness of life, the lack of control over life (childbearing, monthly cycles, all that…) and so are more comfortable with the idea of “mystery” and the unknown/unseen.</p>

<p>I have no idea if women are more religious than men, but there sure is
something about having kids - like letting a piece of your soul walk
around without you. Before I had children, I was way too proud to
ask for God’s help, even though I knew that pride was ridiculous.
Now I’m keenly aware of my own vulnerability, and the vulnerability
of those I love. Maybe men don’t feel this as viscerally, as doubleplay said.</p>

<p>Anyway, a friend sent me this poem today, which speaks to that
vulnerablility:</p>

<p>A Poem That Gives You Goosebumps…</p>

<p>A drunk man in an Oldsmobile
They said had run the light
That caused the six-car pileup
On 109 that night.
When broken bodies lay about
“And blood was everywhere,”
“The sirens screamed out eulogies,”
For death was in the air.</p>

<p>“A mother, trapped inside her car,”
Was heard above the noise;
Her plaintive plea near split the air:
“Oh, God, please spare my boys!”
She fought to loose her pinned hands;
“She struggled to get free,”
But mangled metal held her fast
In grim captivity.</p>

<p>Her frightened eyes then focused
“On where the back seat once had been,”
But all she saw was broken glass and
Two children’s seats crushed in.
Her twins were nowhere to be seen;
"She did not hear them cry, "
"And then she prayed they’d been thrown free, "
"Oh, God, don’t let them die! "</p>

<p>Then firemen came and cut her loose, "
"But when they searched the back, "
"They found therein no little boys, "
But the seat belts were intact.
They thought the woman had gone mad
"And was traveling alone, "
"But when they turned to question her, "
They discovered she was gone.</p>

<p>Policemen saw her running wild
And screaming above the noise
“In beseeching supplication, "
Please help me find my boys!
They’re four years old and wear blue shirts;
“Their jeans are blue to match.””
"One cop spoke up, "They’re in my car, "
And they don’t have a scratch.</p>

<p>They said their daddy put them there
"And gave them each a cone, "
Then told them both to wait for Mom
To come and take them home.
"I’ve searched the area high and low, "
But I can’t find their dad.
"He must have fled the scene, "
“I guess, and that is very bad.”</p>

<p>"The mother hugged the twins and said, "
"While wiping at a tear, "
"He could not flee the scene, you see, "
“For he’s been dead a year.”
"The cop just looked confused and asked, "
"Now, how can that be true? "
"The boys said, "“Mommy, Daddy came "
“And left a kiss for you.”” "</p>

<p>He told us not to worry
"And that you would be all right, "
And then he put us in this car with
"The pretty, flashing light. "
"We wanted him to stay with us, "
"Because we miss him so, "
"But Mommy, he just hugged us tight "
And said he had to go.</p>

<p>He said someday we’d understand
"And told us not to fuss, "
"And he said to tell you, Mommy, "
“He’s watching over us.”
The mother knew without a doubt
"That what they spoke was true, "
“For she recalled their dad’s last words, " " I
will watch over you.”</p>

<p>The firemen’s notes could not explain
"The twisted, mangled car, "
And how the three of them escaped
Without a single scar.
"But on the cop’s report was scribed, "
"In print so very fine, "
An angel walked the
beat tonight on Highway 109.</p>

<p>yecccchhhh.</p>

<p>sorry, geomom.</p>

<p>was there a message at the end of that poem that said “Send this to 3 friends and you will see an angel in 24 hours. If you don’t send it on, the angel will be angry and plunk a huge zit on your nose.”</p>

<p>the poll question was so vague as to be useless, “religious” is such a wide term</p>

<p>its like asking, do you love? that is it…what does that mean?</p>

<p>what exactly was the poll, what were the questions, etc</p>

<p>I can’t answer the “why are women more religious” because I don’t know what women were thinking the question meant</p>

<p>as for the poem, if the boys had died, would she have blamed God?</p>

<p>CGM: </p>

<p>LOL, I was going to add a disclaimer about it being sucky
poetry, but I figured, I really, REALLY didn’t want to risk that zit!</p>

<p>As for the last question: everyone dies - do we blame God or not?</p>

<p>Right now my younger son is blaming God for physics:</p>

<p>DS: “Why does physics have to be so complicated?”
Me: “Maybe sometime in the future we’ll figure out a
better way to explain it to ourselves.”
DS: “I just think God should have figured out a simpler way
to run the universe.”</p>

<p>In case anyone still thinks the OP is asking a serious question, I refer you to this thread:</p>

<p><a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=383664[/url]”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=383664&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

<p>I believe that originally started as a thread called: “Which colleges are good for homophobic people?” in the College Search & Selection section.</p>

<p>Check out the OP’s other posts. You will see we are dealing with a case of trollery.</p>

<p>If I had to guess I would say it’s because us men are naturally taught less of that stuff as kids. Many of our fathers don’t really partake in many religious things or talk about them with friends very often, whereas you can find women talking about god and beliefs wherever you go. I think it’s just a matter of dependence on a bigger figure. I think men are typically more confident and so they are not dying to learn and follow all this “greater being” stuff. I personally am being brought up a catholic but noticing the reasons why I’m being taught it and why religion is here to begin with (I believe the whole idea was brought up as a clever control mechanism by ancient governments to keep order and rule) I am having an extremely difficult time believing. Don’t get me wrong, I want to believe, but I don’t want to be kidding myself either. I think that religion can help as a tool certainly but as a way of living, it will only cause war.</p>

<p>Angry, I think just as many boys as girls get a religous upbringing. I don’t know any families that have the boys stay home from church/Sunday School but their sisters have to go. And I also disagree with men not talking about religion as often as women. My 20 year old son and his friends spend alot of time talking philosophy and religion. Now, they don’t know personal stuff like what’s going on in their families but they often talk about Creationism and the philosophy behind different religions.</p>

<p>"I think it’s just a matter of dependence on a bigger figure. Men are typically more confident and not dying to learn to follow all this “greater being stuff”. Excuse me while I go throw up… The helpless female stereotype is so over - My Mom (who is 77) didn’t even buy it.</p>

<p>Having faith in God is harder when you don’t understand the reason then just saying that there is no God.</p>

<p>AnudduhMom, absolutely not. I’m not a ■■■■■, and I stand by those posts. Your false accusation is distasteful. I don’t understand why you’re offended by the question.</p>

<p>Anyway, yeah, I’m serious about the question. Why do more women consider religion a “very important” part of their lives? Thanks to those who attempted to answer it.</p>

<p>

The sociology of religion.
No, where did you get that?</p>

<p>Men are more “European”. ;)</p>
