Why did you apply to UChicago?

2-3 weeks till the decisions are out! Just wondering why everyone else applied.

Why I applied to UChicago:
-Excellent academics
-INTELLECTUAL CULTURE (the idea of having more nerds around than in other places appeals to me ;p)
-“Quirkiness”–UChicago is not just another top-tier, big-name school. It has its own unique culture and a distinct sense of humor
-The Core attracted me a lot when I first browsed their website
-Beautiful architecture

Hope I get a massive congrats message next time I check my UChicago account, and good luck to you all! <3 <3 <3

I really can’t wait for decisions to come out !!!
This i swhy I applied to UChicago:

  • Intelectual Culture
  • The fact that the Fermilab is like right across the street
  • The campus, so HOGWART-ESQUE <3
    -The Core

Good luck everyone, 3 more weeks yall, 3 more weeks :D

UChicago has ties to Fermilab, but it is by no means right across the street. [University of Chicago to Fermilab Linac - Google Maps](<a href=“Google Maps”>Google Maps)

I was just metaphorically speaking Oxalis :)

UChicago got a more direct role in managing Fermilab in 2007:
[Fermi Research Alliance, LLC.](http://www.fra-hq.org/)

and it has always run Argonne
[Argonne National Laboratory … for a brighter future](http://www.anl.gov/)

Molectron – Okay, just making sure. I didn’t want you to go searching for Fermilab duing O-Week and not being able to find it! Best of luck.

Thanks Oxalis.

I applied because everything about UChicago seemed ready to push, expand and shake up my expectations. I wanted to learn, and to be surrounded by others who were so passionate about doing the same that they’d discuss Plato and Marx and Proust with me at the dining hall, but be equally excited about the Jersey Shore (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/31/arts/television/jersey-shore-has-its-day-at-university-of-chicago.html</a>). I wanted to live in one of the greatest cities in the world, but have my own campus, and neighborhood, to feel at home in.

Don’t worry, the Core won’t be on any of your lists by the end of 1st year. Yes, the courses can be interesting, but not nearly as interesting as the ones that you can’t take because you have to take a core requirement. The opportunity cost is staggering.

Well, that’s a bit of an overgeneralization, isn’t it? I took two non-core classes during my first quarter. And the curriculum allots quite a bit of space for electives, but you may not get to take them immediately due to conflicts with sequences. It’s a matter of good planning, really.

I loved the Core, and I also took quite a few non-Core classes during my first year. You can very easily space if out over four years.

UChicago is my first choice by far. Everything about it is amazing. I still haven’t gotten over the feelings I had while visiting. It rained the entire time, literally pouring, and everyone hid inside max pavlevsky waiting for it to get better. It made everything better though. We all laughed with the guides as we ran splashing through the quad. my dad asked grace for a plastic bag to keep his stuff dry in and she got someone to give him a gigantic athletic bag for free. We took cover in every building we got to see the real spirit of uchicago and real personalities and it made me fall in love. Btw I visited beforr the school year started in case many of you don’t remember a day it rained that terribly.

I’ve been setting myself up for rejection though and its breaking my heart. I don’t want to get bad news and be sad about it but I don’t think I can help it. Every other school just gives me lukewarm feelings compred to uchicago.

That’s also true, although it’s made difficult by the quarter system… Especially with full-year sequences, I find myself not being able to take many of the classes I want. If you take two sequences a year, then there goes half your slots for classes. And a lot of necessary Core classes and major-core classes are sequences.

In regards to UChicago3, I must agree with to an extent.
So far, some of my least favorite classes have been in the core, and there are soooo many classes I want to take but am precluded from because of a) the core b) stupid decisions I made in regards to what major/classes to take last year
But I have yet to take art (which I have acting fundamentals next quarter!!! yayy) so maybe that one will actually be good. :D

Oxalis, I’m not saying that your schedule is consumed by the core and you have no time for anything else. I’m saying that for any given core class there exists a class that I would much rather be taking and that would be much more interesting. While I ultimately appreciate the core for forcing me to explore subjects that I would have otherwise overlooked, I always think about the classes that I’m missing because of it. Ultimately, would I rather take Core Bio or a graduate class on Ancient Economies? Easy choice, if I had the choice.

-Excellent academics
-intellectual atmosphere
-distinct traditions
-vision: to teach you how to think
-sense of humor
-friendly people

I applied because UChicago seems to ooze an unique intellectual atmosphere that oozes a bit of humor and quirkiness. I felt that I could fit into that, even more so when one considers how intense academics at UChicago can be. Yes, really nice collegiate Gothic architecture is definitely a factor.

I’m also a science nerd. The Enrico Fermi Institute, Fermilab, The Argonne National Laboratory…

I enjoyed the unsolicited mailings I got over the summer from UChicago, but they already had me before the first email.

it was one of my safety schools

@iborpastan, Glad to see another person who applied for almost the same reasons I did! Hope we both get in because we have the passion for learning and the nerdiness that distinguish UChicago students! :D

@PizzaFatFace, Did you apply like 5-10+ years ago? UChicago can’t be a safety for anyone today.

^ PizzaFatFace has at least one kid starting the college app process so it was a generation ago.
