Da Bronx, South Central LA, South Chicago are at least as bad as Philly’s ghetto’s. DC, Baltimore, Miami, Houston, Detroit (especially) and virtually every other major american city has scary neighborhoods.

Philly has some great places as well. Center City and Old City are full of rich and hip people, and Philly has plenty of people who make lots of money. It really is your typical older major US city.

yes, that’s correct, because your personal opinions can be generalized to EVERYONE. of course.

as for the REAL topic of this thread - I love my school (Stanford, where I will be starting this fall) because of the people there, the quality of the academics, the beauty of the campus, the amazing research and work opportunities, the school spirit, and just about everything ever. I know I would’ve been happy at any of my other choices but I’ve just become so happy in the past couple of weeks. Rejection at my top choice has been long forgotten.

Why do I love Clemson University? (engineering major)

-President Barker and his top 20 public university by 2011 campaign which is leading to the school’s rise in reputation (at least among US News fans haha). Also, the administration is amazing, friendly and visable on campus.
-School spirit, one of the best in the country, everyone including the town of Clemson gets behind the school and its athletic teams. Everyone on campus is wearing orange and purple.
-Great engineering program which is why I chose the school in the first place. Sciences, nursing, education, business, and agriculture are also really good majors.
-Great location in the mountains for people like me who like outdoor activities.

Would really appreciate if the posters talk about positive experience of their OWN school rather than putting down others, the idea here is to help newcomers hear first hand from students what is it that they admire in their schools.

Would love to hear about not just known schools but all schools so we get a wider picture.

Please make this post a value-for-time read! For students as well as parents who come looking for help.

it would take too long to describe all the reasons I love Johns Hopkins University.
The simple reason would be that it’s perfect for me, and offers me experiences and opportunities that no other school ever could. :)

hahaha. good to know Phead
and I’m looking forward to a day when our business school and law school is ready to go
plus, our eventual takeover of Baltimore (you KNOW it’s going to happen anyways…we’re already halfway there)lol, and the completion of Science City!

^^ seriously, I think once Science City gets completed, JHU’s name and prestige will rocket up to Stanford/Harvard-esque levels ( or very close) simply because of the awesome facilities and awesome research that will be done there, very similar to Silicon Valley and whatever Harvard does in cambridge…lol.

Within 5 years, Hopkins will have a biotech park to rival MIT’s biotech park. I lived two blocks away from MIT’s biotech park all my life. All the major biotech firms are situated around MIT, not Harvard Hopkins hired the same company (Forest City Science & Technology Group) to build an equivalent biotech park adjacent to the Hopkins medical campus.

Hopkins has a chance of creating a world class science community that can rival Palo Alto, Cambridge, Research Triangle Park, and other research hubs in China, India, Singapore, Japan, etc… (with the newly minted biotech park and Vision 2030 for Science City)

whoa you two
For me, it’s WashU.
I think although WashU doesn’t have the same name recognition as other top schools (although maybe it deserves it, or at least close to them?) WashU students are definitely some of the happier college students around the country. Plus, our dorms and food are some of the best too! The students are also known for being really friendly, down to earth, humble, yet smart.

I was admitted to Hopkins and ever since May 1 I’ve been wondering what my life would be like if I chose Hopkins instead. Personally, I think both schools are quite similar (strong academics, relatively small student body, and a focus on undergraduates where it’s needed). I ended up choosing WashU because I knew it was a rising school and I wanted an environment filled with friendly, laid-back kids who knew when to study and when to have fun. Most importantly, I wanted to be surrounded with kids just as smart or smarter than I am, to learn as much as I can from them all.

I don’t think I’ve had closure on turning down Hopkins (maybe I could use some advice too, who knows) and I don’t think I ever will because I’m sure if I chose Hopkins I’d be just as happy. Right now, it’s tough to come on these boards and be reminded of how much more name recognition and prestige Hopkins has over WashU (trust me! I’m Chinese :P) so I’ll probably end up leaving CC before summer officially begins.

Phead: that is sick! I had no idea, haha. I hope they can get some light rails and magnet rail trains to other cities beyond DC from Baltimore and JHU like NYC, Philly, etc. I think Baltimore is going to get so much better throughout the years, which should help a lot too.
That video was pretty cool.

noob: please don’t feel bad! I really like and admire WashU as well, and think that you should be happy and proud of your choice. Believe me, you are not the first or only one to pick WashU over JHU, and you will be happy there. Plus, you can always come back to hopkins for grad school!!

Oh no, I have another friend that I tried to convince via Facebook to come to JHU. She picked WashU over JHU and McGill. I do not mind because I know WUSTL is a fine school that will do awesome in the future. WashU is a great university and has tremendously awesome food (YES, Former President of JHU commented on how awesome WashU’s dining service was during a Faculty Assembly meeting two years ago). You must be proud about going to WashU because you know it is a top notch school with unrivaled academics. It will take time but WashU will find it’s place in the hearts and minds of the academic world and US general community :)
