"Why Don't the 1 Percent Feel Rich?"

“The Millionaire Next Door” was written in 1996. When there weren’t quite so many millionaires as there are today.
While the numbers of how much you make to be at the top may have changed, the personality attributes haven’t changed. I believe the research and findings still hold true today.
Here are the seven factors from the book for wealth:

1. They live below their means. Far below their means.
2. They actively put energy and time into acquiring wealth in an efficient manner.
3. Financial independence is more important than displaying social status.
4. Their parents didn’t help them through the tough spots.
5. Their kids provide for themselves (my H would say “they’re off the payroll”)
6. They are proficient in targeting market opportunities.
7. They chose the right occupation.

We did this early in our marriage till about 15 years ago when our last kid was off our payroll and we relaxed on our spending. But we’ve always had a cleaning lady and gardener which DH and I mutually agreed on.
As for #4, both DH’s and my parents paid our way through private schools and we graduated with zero debts which we also did for our children.
