How to Establish Instate Residency in OH (previously was - Why I got rejected)

Disappointed

My high school GPA is 3.66, and I earned straight A’s in math and physics. I was very involved in various activities, particularly in STEM-related programs. I attended a community college where I achieved a GPA of 3.88, and I transferred to a university after my second semester.(Since it is my first semester at the university, I don’t have a GPA yet) However, I’m not receiving much financial aid because I am an out-of-state student.

I’ve been advised to consider attending Case Western University since it is close to my home and offers generous financial aid compared to my current university. I have achieved straight A’s, with over 97 in all of my classes. Unfortunately, the university I am at does not offer a midterm report, so I asked if I could screenshot my grades from Carmen and send them instead. They agreed, but ultimately declined my application.

I’m not sure why this happened, as I believe I was a strong candidate. Currently, I have 42 credits, including my classes from the progressive university. Is it possible that there was an error in my application? Additionally, I am a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

I am sure Case Western rejects many many students submitting transfer applications. It doesn’t mean there is something wrong with your application, it most likely just means there isn’t a spot for you. There are only so many spots in so many majors. And if they are full, that’s all it is, too full.

In fact, in their last CDS, Case reported admitting only 219 of 684 transfer applicants. This is a highly self-selected group, meaning most of those applicants would have had good reasons to believe they were strong candidates. So it is just a fact the odds are against you.

Fortunately, you are at a four year university. Please embrace all that this college has to offer. You have only been there less than a semester…

Congratulations on your transfer to your four year college…make the most of it!

I don’t know anything about Case Western transfer process, but could it be that it’s from you already transferring once already? TBH, that might be a red flag unless you tried to explain why you will be enrolled in 3 different schools in a span of 3 semesters. You can always try to transfer again next cycle once you get your grades.

As an out-of-state student, I’m facing significant charges for tuition. I used the NET price calculator at CWRU, and I found that I can afford it. For the large class sizes. As someone with ADHD, I believe that Case Western Reserve University, with its smaller classes, would be a better fit for me.

Now that CWRU is off the table, what is your plan B to get to an affordable situation?

Do you need help with that? Have you applied elsewhere as a potential transfer?

Honestly, I think the that you were looking to transfer a second time after less than one semester might have been part of the reason you didn’t get accepted to CWRU.

If OOS costs at a public university are too high, perhaps consider a transfer to a public in your state. As an instate resident, you have a decent chance of acceptance (but not to places like UVA, Michigan, UNC CH) at some public university in your state.

I applied to other universities
I got accepted at Cleveland uni and wright uni
I applied to Dayton also since it has strong CS program but I haven’t heard anything

Great! Will these be affordable options for you?

That’s good. It sounds like you have some other options to consider for a transfer which are instate publics. I hope they are affordable for you.

I’m from Ohio and my whole immediate family still lives there. Some are graduates of the schools you mentioned, and have done just fine!

The problem is I don’t have a state I belong to
I’m originally from overseas (not USA)
But I have USA passport so I’m not international
I do not belong to anywhere

Yes bc they consider me in state

That’s weird bc the school I’m currently at is in the same state and they consider me out of state

I tried to apply for residency for my school I got denied twice

It sounds like you reside in Ohio now…as the publics you named are Ohio publics.

How long has your family resided in Ohio currently? Does your family reside in Ohio now?

tOSU could possibly have a different residency requirement than the colleges you listed.

And yet some of those Ohio public universities will grant you instate status.

You’ll never know why you were rejected. It could be you needed too much money, you are too early and your hs and test scores don’t measure up. A bad essay.

No one knows.

Embrace where you are or find a more transfer friendly school.

It’s their loss. Move on.

I agree with you I needed to much help with financial stuff

And I called them they said I’m at OSU so they don’t know why i want to transfer ( I didn’t say it was bc of financial issues)

So I guess I really need to move on
Although it’s hard bc I really want to go to top schools but at least I’m learning and going to university

Apply to Miami of Ohio.

No I said no one knows. There can be many reasons. It doesn’t matter why.

There’s lots of top schools and lots with far better name recognition than CWRU. The Miami suggestion is a fine one. U Cincy too
