Why is recommended to take Honor Chemistry before AP Chemistry?

Sorry - didn’t realize the link wouldn’t open to the specific information I was referencing. You need to click on the “College Credit in High School” section to read the specifics. Centre is also very restrictive in how many credits it allows. They are not at all the norm and this does NOT apply to most schools. Most high schools (at least according to collegedata) don’t offer AP to anyone other than juniors and seniors, with the exception of some of the AP “lite” classes like Human Geography.

Your son’s AP credit will most likely transfer to most schools, but AP credit policies are determined by each school. Also, policies may vary by major. Some schools won’t allow AP credit in your major, especially in the lab sciences. Something to check out when you’re looking at policies.

This is very good for us to know. I had no idea there were any schools that required students to be in a certain grade in high school. I’m glad you posted this just to keep us on the lookout - not that AP credit should be the only reason to choose a school, but just to know ahead of time is certainly helpful! Thanks for the info!

hypnotoad107, can you please explain what you mean by:

The sophomores that struggle most are the ones that jump from bio honors freshmen year straight to ap chem sophomore year. If they take ap chem sophomore year then they have no previous chemistry. About 50% of all students that make 5s in the class are sophomores.

If 50% of those earning 5s are sophomores, then they must do well in the class. I imagine it is easier after a full year of Honors Chemistry, but is it necessary for very bright students to take the full year of Chemistry before the AP class?

My school is the same way, has no requirements for any AP sciences, EXCEPT for freakin ap chem. People can go into ap physics c with absolutely no physics background, i even took ap bio sophomore year with no bio background whatsoever, but for some reason the administrators draw the line at ap chem @_@ It doesn’t really make sense to me, I feel like it should be either all ap classes require the honors course beforehand or no ap classes require honors (I would prefer the latter)

OP here. Having actually started AP Chem, I now completely see why. Skills like balancing equations quickly, naming compounds, memorizing polyatomic ions, you need TONS of practice just to be ready for this class. It would just be too much to have to catch up on all those skills while learning abstruse AP Chem concepts.

AP Physics C doesn’t build on knowledge like AP Chem does.
