Why no parking in front of fire hydrants?

Good plan, gourmetmom.

The house I grew up in (and just recently sold) had a fire hydrant in front of it at the edge of the driveway. So people took to parking across the street, but right in front (on the other side) of our driveway. Remember how big cars were back when, say most of us (now) parents were learning to drive? Need I say more?

If you could afford a car then spend some money to park at a parking lot. If you are visiting a friend or a business establishment, and they don’t have a place for you to park, maybe they are telling you something.

IIRC, in Tokyo they had these things in the street that came up out of the pavement that was a sort of block thing that you could control with a key. So when you weren’t there no one could park in this spot because the post/pole/lever/whatever it was was sticking up out of the street and would damage the car. Fascinating concept.

Where I live in addition to handicapped spots there are extra-wide spaces closer to the door for new Mommy parking. It is great for wrangling strollers and the like.

In my younger (and not so nice days) I used to carry around stickers that we would stick on drivers windows-right about eye-level for cars that would block wheelchair ramps or on people that would double park on by SF streets that compared their parking skills to their prowess in the bedroom. The stickers were very difficult to remove. I am sure I would get in trouble for it now, but it was very satisfying supplying a little instant karma.

A friend of mine had a stash of these red cards. On it was printed something like: “You have parked in two parking spaces. It is inconsiderate a$$h0les like you that make driving a real joy. Next time why don’t you park sideways? That way you can take up 3 spaces”.

It was a riot. He’d put the cards on people’s windshields. Would probably get punched out today.

Nice solutions, jym and MizzBee. A guy in the Fremont area always managed to double-park his motorcycle. I tell you, it takes skills to succeed at that. He definitely deserved one of those cards and/or stickers.
